Please ID the maker and type of this sterling hammered spoon. It is 5-7/8' long and the spoon is 2-1/8" in diameter. It weighs 40 grams.

Wouldn't you think that Marshall Fields wholesale silver manufacturer would be the most likely candidate? Usually you would expect a (925/1000) hallmark but in this case the word STERLING has been used? I would think this would be the most likely choice. There are a few threads about Marshall Fields when trying to figure out the origins of certain hand-hammered silver pieces ::

Personally would have trouble attributing this mark, or for that matter, the (925/1000) [Evon only shows the (925/000) variant of the mark in her book] to a Marshall Field wholesale workshop, especially since she notes that the workshops didn't actually open untill 1903 and pieces found with the (925/1000) show up in the 1901 Daniel Low catalog, and when those also bear a retailer's mark, they seem to be East Coast firms, can't recall seeing any Chicago or the MIdwest retailer marks. Simple hammered pieces similar to the (925/1000) are sometimes found with a similar 'STERLING' mark, including the little 'tail' on the 'G', can't say whether this piece or the (925/1000) items were made by the same maker, but have seen more than one holloware item with marks like this, also bearing the mark of the New York/New Jersey based Merrill Shops...

Good things to research would be "Hand Hammered Arts & Crafts Spoon" and "The Merrill Shops Hand Hammered" and you can also try "Galt & Bro Hand Hammered Silver" because I noticed a few silver dealers believed they had "Galt & Bro" when in actuality their items may have been produced by the "Marshall Fields Silver Wholesale Division" ::

It might be helpful to research "Kalo Hand-Hammered Silver" because the Kalo workshop produced many important silver objects associated with the arts & crafts movement :
