George Smith II and Thomas Hayter (Grimwade 909) had workshops and a retail shop at 4, Huggin Lane, Wood Street in the Parish of St. Michael, London. Employed in the shop were three shopmen headed by Hayter, Henry Thomas Jennings was one of the shopmen. Hayter was a careful man with concerns about being robbed and would spend hours applying secret marks to gold rings etc. prior to them coming up for sale so that they could be identified as his in the event of a robbery. If a suspicious person entered the shop Hayter would say "take the spoons upstairs" this would be a secret signal for one of the shopmen to go to the rear workshops and alert the journeymen, he would then go and fetch the constable who was probably on a retainer to be close by.

In your private mailbox on this sites I've put summaries of

George Smith of Huggin Lane (George Smith II) family back to around 1700. Grimwade is not correct in all detail as the first few entries are for another George Smith (one point five) .

His wife , Hannah Wood and her mother Martha Wood,nee Eaton and her family, the Eatons back to the late 1600's

I have documentary material , wills, marriage license, inventories etc
on the Eatons which I can let you have.

I'll have more material on George himself fairly soon !
