A visit to the factory of Foster & Bailey, even at this between-seasons date, found everything brisk. They are evidently determined to maintain, if not to strengthen, the position now occupied by them in the good wishes of the trade, and their products in all lines, as recently shown to us, are equal to the accomplishment. They are marvels of artistic beauty and merit combined.

PROVIDENCE

There has been considerable building of an extensive character in the jewelry section of this city within the past few years and already those buildings that have been completed are occupied to nearly their full capacity, and several more new buildings are in course of erection. With these changes come rumors of another new building to be erected by Theodore W. Foster, of Foster & Bailey, to be located on Richmond and Pine Sts., while another rumor has it that a large firm of silversmiths of New York are contemplating removing to this city.

Theodore W. Foster's views regarding the depression of 1920-21:

In my opinion, judging from reports of salesmen and mail that comes to us from our customers, there is a tendency among the trade to look upon the past as a nightmare after a debauch and with restoratives to be applied by the new administration business health will be restored and the dark brown taste and headache will slowly disappear.

Viewed from another standpoint, — a few big whales got into the lake, thrashed around and stirred up the mud, driving all other living things to the shore. Fishermen caught no fish and by combined effort of common sense the whales were harpooned and pulled out. The lake is settling fast; business is out for fish and with a lot of nibbles and some strong bites the business is reviving.

People are beginning to buy their needs and slowly but surely normal times are returning.

This is the richest country on earth; the wealth is here and will be spent for such things as a good free people require, and not the least among the things needed is silverware, jewelry and kindred articles. Jewelry business always keeps pace with other industries. It always has and always will, for our people are human and must have something in the way of adornment to act as seasoning.

Foster & Bailey started in business Jan. 1, 1873, with but six employes; now there are 200, who are paid $10,000 a month. The firm now occupy the basement and the first and second floors of the largest manufacturing buildings of the Sackett & Davis estate, of which property they are the lessees, and the office, stock and shipping rooms are in the two-story brick building adjoining the factory.
