A thread to explore the nature of Zacho Sterling and how it fit into the Modernist movement of the 20th Century. Any samples of Zacho silver or retrieved information about his business can be added to fill out this thread.
First, who was Axel Zacho? If one quickly looks at the internet, there is little immediate information beyond the existence of his furniture store on Wilshire Boulevard and a celebrated designer house in Beverly Hills. So some deep searching is needed.
Some basics. Axel was born in Denmark in 1899 and died in 1955, reportedly taking his own life over marital unease (according to his architect). His wife Else was born on 12 July 1903 and died in April 1984 at age 80, residing in Santa Monica California. A son, Ib Zacho was born 29 August 1932 and passed at UCLA Medical Center on 24 July 2004. [The name Ib Nyrop Zacho is linked to 201 Ocean Avenue Unit 806p, Santa Monica 90402. It seems it may indirectly link to 9814 Easton Drive, Beverly Hills 90210. Please do not disturb anyone at these addresses!]
The Zacho Furniture Store was located at 3157 Wilshire Boulevard, reportedly from the 1930's up until its' closure around 1962.This was near the 1929 Bullock's-Wilshire which was undergoing modernist renovations during the late 1930's (the same architect who builds Axels B.H. showcase home.) [Not to get too far ahead, but Allan Adler's shop is not far away on Sunset Boulevard and he later did business with Bullock's.]
In 1942, Mr. & Mrs. Axel Zacho appear near the end of this list for a gathering at the Wladorf-Astoria Hotel of the Committee for a free Denmark: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/lweb/digital ... 7_0086.pdf
