I mentioned some time ago a most effective smoke-consuming apparatus I had seen in operation at Messrs. John Round and Sons, Tudor-street, Sheffield. Sir F. T. Mappin, Bart., M.P. , the head of the Sheaf Works, and chairman of the Sheffield Gas Company, writes to the Sheffield papers earnestly advising all proprietors of steam engines to visit these works, ‘‘ and see for themselves the great advantage and desirability of adopting the invention,”

John Round and Son (limited), Sheffield, has been issued, and states the nett profit for the year to be £3,275, which, with the balance of £177 from the previous year, will make £3,452 available for dividend. The directors recommend that of this sum £3,125 be appropriated to the payment of a dividend of 12s. 6d. per share on the 5,000 shares of the company, being at the rate of 12½ per cent, per annum, and that the balance of £327 be carried forward to next year.

The honor of having brought out the latest infallible cure for the smoke nuisance rests with a firm in the silver and electro-plate trade, to wit, Messrs. Round and Son, Tudor Street. The appliance, which is the invention of their fireman, is now in operation at Messrs. Round's works, and it is claimed that the most eagle-eyed smoke inspector would fail to detect anything more than the merest film issuing from their engine chimney, and that only during the process of firing.

The numerous friends of Mr. Joseph Ridge, the energetic general manager of Messrs. John Round and Son, will regret to learn that that gentleman has been seriously ill. Mr. Ridge has been away from business for about a month, but a turn for the better has now taken place, which it is hoped will result in an early return to the active duties of his office.

I am pleased to note that Mr. Joseph Ridge, the able and energetic general manager of John Round and Son, Limited, is rapidly regaining his former strength. His absence from business has been a prolonged one, and his case at one time looked exceedingly grave. His return to active work has been celebrated by the work-people by an entertainment at the Cambridge Hall, at which Mr. Ridge was presented with a beautifully illuminated address. The gathering, which was presided over by Mr. Walter Rawson, the head of the engraving department, was graced by the presence of the Archdeacon of Sheffield, who delivered a highly complimentary speech. The archdeacon, who noted with pleased surprise the musical talent displayed by the workmen in the course of the evening, suggested the foundation of a musical society in connection with the works. The hint has already been taken, and the society, which will soon be in full working order has been granted the use of a room in the works for its weekly practices. Altogether, the relations existing between the workmen, the general staff, and management of John Round and Sons are of the happiest character, and do credit to all concerned.

John Round and Son, silversmiths and cutlers, Tudor Works, Sheffield, have obtained contracts from the War-office for one-half of the metal table-spoons required by our troops in South Africa. The total number needed is 145,000. The Sheffield contractors for army razors, table cutlery, clasp knives and similar goods are at present exceptionally busy upon large supplementary orders for these goods, the requirements of the war having depleted stocks in the stores.

The rapidly shortening days are naturally suggestive of lamps. People with valuable furniture and pictures don't like gas, and the electric light as yet is not very common in private houses. The next best thing is the paraffin lamp, an article which lends itself to a great variety of highly artistic treatment. I came across some very fine specimens the other day in the show-rooms of Messrs. John Round and Son, who seem, in one department of their business, to make a specialty of lamps. One very important feature was pointed out to me in the shape of a self-acting extinguisher, which comes into operation in the event of the lamp being accidentally overturned. This removes the chief objection to the use of paraffin, namely, its liability to accident.

I was invited to look at a new smoke consuming apparatus at the works of Messrs, John Round and Son, silver-platers, on Wednesday. It is the invention of Mr. George Edgar, the company’s engineer, and is provisionally protected in the joint names of himself and Mr. J. Saxton. Hot air is admitted into an air chamber at the extreme end of the fire-box, and this meeting the flame from the furnace effects perfect combustion. An automatic regulator is the principal feature in the invention, which is the outcome of six years’ incessant study. The system is simplicity itself, and there is nothing to get out of order but a brick bridge and the grate bars which are subject to the usual wearing-out by fire. During twenty-two years in Sheffield I have seen and described more smoke-consumers than it is possible to remember, but this invention is the only one which seems to be both simple and effective. It has been in operation at Round’s for over two months, and if it were only as successfully applied at other establishments there would soon be an end of the smoke nuisance in the town.

The old business of John Round and Son, silver-platers, &c., Sheffield, is being transferred to a limited liability company, with a capital of £50,000. In September, 1870, Messrs. Round called their creditors together with liabilities amounting to £34,000, but it was wisely decided to carry on the business. This course has proved eminently satisfactory, seeing that in the three and a-half years sufficient profit has been made to pay the creditors in full with interest up to date, besides leaving a handsome surplus for the original proprietors.

The silver-platers must have been doing very well, if Messrs. John Round and Son, Limited, give any indication of, the real condition of trade. During the year ending 31st December last they have made a profit which enables them to Pied a dividend of 12½ per cent., and carry £500 to the reserve fund. The company recently acquired the adjoining premises - The Pavilion Music-hall - for £4549, which will enable them to carry on their business with more convenience.

Amongst the special articles recently produced was a silver casket, which was forwarded this week to Wolverhampton. It is a presentation to the Father of the House of Commons, the Right Hon. C. P. Villiers, who has sat for that borough continuously for sixty-two years. The casket, which is a very good example of art work, is to be presented to Mr. Villiers by the County Borough of Wolverhampton. The manufacturers were Messrs. John Round and Son, Limited, Tudor Works, Sheffield.
