The company was established in 1905 by a Corsican, François Coty, making eau de cologne. It is said that the firm's success turned on the accidental dropping of a bottle of Rose Jacqueminot by François Coty in a Louvre department store which when smelled by the fashionable clientele caused a rush for the product. By 1910 his firm were a market leader in high-priced perfumes.
