Military Gifts, Awards, & Inscriptions

Post by Traintime »

Opening a new category where these special items in Gold, Sterling or Silverplate can be posted to increase our knowledge of these customs of presentations.

International Silver Springtime (1957) Water Pitcher with engraved inscription "MIKE BURBAGE/EXECUTIVE OFFICER/FROM OFFICERS. USS. F.D.R./ SEPT. 1959

Found history: http://www.epnaao.com/BIOS_files/DECEAS ... es%20L.pdf
Notes: Item left as found. May have been accompanied by "Large" size waiter tray in this pattern but bearing no inscription (not acquired). Midway class Aircraft Carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt was first named Coral Sea when built in 1945, but was soon renamed to honor the recently deceased President. Built with a straight deck for propeller aircraft, it was refitted in the mid-50's having an angle deck for jet operations. Early full time capability for nuclear armaments carried on-board. Has become the subject of investigations into alleged UFO mass sightings (see MUFON network site) during operating cruise in this era(c.1957-8), rebuffed by Burbage letter claiming no such incident. While Burbage left this ship for several years, he would return as Captain and Commanding Officer in the mid-'60's during Viet Nam Conflict. Died in 2006. Ship dismantled for scrap salvage in 1977. Space aliens apparently still flying.
