A young man named Tasker, who recently came into a fortune of £700,000, is suing Messrs. Streeter and Company, the eminent London jewellers, etc., for the recovery of £17,000, the value of various articles of jewellery bought by him from the firm and not delivered. In the course of the case it transpired that the plaintiff had purchased from Messrs. Streeter articles to the value of £87,000 within a few weeks. The purchases included the famous Agra diamond, valued at £15,000, and seven other diamonds of the aggregate value of £30,000, and also the Hope diamond, said to be worth £30,000.

Messrs. Streeter and Company deny certain of Taster's allegations.

A WHITE PARTRIDGE

Mr. G. S. Streeter, of the Bond-street firm of diamond merchants, shot, at Old Park, Bishops Stortford, a white partridge. When the bird felll the rest of the covey stopped and surrounded it, plainly endeavouring to help the dead partridge.

Me. Streeter has on view at his establishment in Bond-street an extraordinary piece of carbon from Brazil, which, it is stated, is the largest ever found in any part of the world, the weight being nearly 800 carats. The specimen will be purchased, it is understood, for the collection of one of the scientific institutions.

The establishment of Messrs. Streeter & Co., 18, New Bond Street, is just now especially rich in its collection of precious stones, among them being several objects of more than ordinary interest, to be seen by special permission from the firm. These comprise, among other noteworthy gems :—The great " Victoria " diamond, which weighs 406 carats ; it was found at the Cape and is the largest diamond yet discovered. It is proposed to present it to the Queen at her Jubilee in June next year. An orange coloured cut diamond of great brilliancy, weighing 115 carats, or ten carats more than the Koh-i-noor, set round with a border of large white brilliants ; the largest black diamond ever found ; the formation of pearls found off the coast of Western Australia and known as the "Southern Cross," from the resemblance of their disposition to that constellation ; and a large collection of rough diamonds and gold recently discovered in a Brazilian river bed. Besides the above, there are eleven fine uncut rubies, weighing together 190 carats, from the newly acquired Burmese mines.

Judgment was rendered Feb, 27, in London, Eng., in the Agra diamond case in favor of Joseph C. Tasker, in his suit against Streeter & Co., jewelers, alleging over-charges to the amount of $85,000. In the other cases judgment was given in favor of Streeter & Co. Tasker inherited $3,500,000 not long ago, and started out to spend it. He spent nearly $500,000 for jewelry, buying some famous gems. Afterwards he sued Streeter & Co., alleging that they had charged him too much for certain diamonds. Among the jewels he bought, paying $160,000 for it, was the celebrated Hope diamond.

NEW CAPITAL ISSUES

Lacloche Freres, Limited. — Formed to acquire the business of jewellers, hitherto carried on by Lacloche Fréres: at Paris, Madrid, San Sebastian, Biarritz, and elsewhere, and to add to it the succession to Streeter and Co., Limited, 18 New Bond street. The profits as certified seem to have been large, but the price to be paid for the business looks excessive, as there is very little property to be acquired. "It is too much to ask investors to be satisfied with a statement like the following :— It will be seen by the following that the entire Preference issue is covered by assets. Cash assets arising from this issue, £210,000 ; profits earned to November 16th, estimated, £17,000 ; leaseholds, fixtures, &c., £30,000; total, £257,000.” This tells the subscribers that they will possess the security of their own money. It is true that out of the £210,000 mentioned in the foregoing statement £120,000 is to be utilised for the purchase in cash of the stock-in-trade of Lacloche Fréres at actual cost price, such price to be verified by experts to be appointed by the directors of this company. Three out of five of these directors are Messrs Lacloche Fréres themselves. The purchase price, which goes through two syndicates, is £260,000, of which £130,000 is to go to Lacloche Fréres, and of this no less than £100,000 is for goodwill. On the whole, the British investor will probably think that his French friends are asking too much for their whistle.

Mr. Edwin W. Streeter suggests, in a recent letter to The Times, that the difficulty with respect to foreign watches could be easily surmounted by in future stamping all foreign cases with a distinctive hall-mark and the movements with the name of the country of their origin, and making it illegal for anyone to sell a foreign-made watch not bearing such distinctive marks.

The Ruby Mines of Burmah. — A recant official telegram from Simla announces that the agreement between the Indian Government and Messrs. Streeter & Co., in regard to the ruby mines in Upper Burmah, is practically completed. Messrs. Streeter will pay to the Government four lakhs of rupees annually for five years, during which period they will have the monopoly of opening new mines in the ruby district, and improving existing ones. The rights and privileges of existing native owners are, however, strictly protected, Messrs. Streeter having the refusal of the rubies sold by them. It may be of interest to some of our readers to note that a lakh of rupees equals £10,000.

Australian " Rubies." — Mr. Streeter's lapidaries, while going through the nearly a million carats of Australian " rubies " which he bought from the New Zealand Loan Company for £5, came across jacinths and hyacinths. Mr. Streeter has just presented to the Adelaide School of Mines several specimens of stones and gems. The collection includes a fine specimen of Burma ruby, good colour ; five rough rubies from Mogoh ; two cabochon-cut rubies from Mogoh ; calspar showing small ruby ; five pieces spinal ruby from Upper Burma ; and ruby quartz from Mogoh. Other stones are tourmaline from Momeit State, adjoining Mogoh ; crocidolite, called catseye, from South Africa ; large and fine opal, cut, from Queensland ; opal in matrix from Queensland ; emerald running through quartz, from Bogota, Colombia ; cabochon sapphire, showing " star," from Tasmania ; one rough sapphire from Tasmania ; sunstone in the rough ; another sunstone, cut ; and petrified wood from Arizona. It is quite evident from the foregoing list, as a contemporary observes, that Mr. Streeter wants to give the Australians some idea as to what is and what is not a ruby!
