Burr, Patterson & Co. have moved their factory to the new location at Woodward and Willis Aves. The new shop is not only much larger than the old quarters on Fort St. W., but is lighter and more convenient in many ways.

THE HISTORY OF BURR, PATTERSON & AULD – Fraternity Jeweler for Kappa Kappa Gamma

Burr, Patterson & Auld is one of the oldest jewelry companies in the country, founded as Auld, Inc. in 1870 in Columbus, Ohio. Its initial product specialty was emblematic jewelry for fraternal organizations. Two leading jewelry-manufacturing companies found their origin in “Burr-Patt.” Lloyd G. Balfour came to the company in 1906 as a salesman and left in 1913 to found the L. G. Balfour Company. In 1920, Harry J. Herff and R. L. Jones left Burr-Patt to found the Herff-Jones Company in Indianapolis. In 1926, the fraternity division of Auld, Inc. was sold and merged with Burr, Patterson and Company of Detroit, renamed the Burr, Patterson & Auld Company. In the late 1930s the company was purchased by L. G. Balfour Company, a clandestine merger which effectively controlled the major portion of the Greek fraternity market. An unfair trade practice suit was filed with the Federal Trade Commission in 1961 by a group of smaller manufacturers. After 10 years of unsuccessful legal defense to the suit, the Balfour Company was ordered to close or dispose of the Burr, Patterson & Auld Company. In 1975, the firm moved to Elwood, Indiana, where the manufacture of badges for Kappa Kappa Gamma is exclusively handled by Burr, Patterson & Auld under contract with the Fraternity.

Burr, Patterson & Co., manufacturing jewelers, of Detroit, recently made a ring for a Detroit retailer that was valued at $3,000. It was made of 18 K., gold. Diamonds and rubies composed the settings.

Burr-Patterson & Co., manufacturing jewelers, have moved their plant for the manufacture of fraternity jewelry, into a building facing Roosevelt Park, near the Michigan Central Depot. This concern long has been noted for its fine work and attractive designs. It now probably is one of the largest concerns engaged in this work in the country. Its new location is ideal, and with added facilities will be able to greatly increase its production.

Burr, Patterson & Co., manufacturers, will move soon after the first of the year from their present location at 75 Fort St. W. to their new factory at Woodward and Willis Aves. The change will result in a big expansion of the firm’s space and a consequent enlargement of their facilities, and it is expected that about 50 workmen will be employed in the new place as against 30 in the present quarters. But for the fact that Burr, Patterson & Co. are now working over-time on holiday orders, the change might be made in December. As it is, the firm has called in its traveling salesmen and will content itself with present business until after the shift in location. The new factory will occupy tie entire second story of a new business block and will be about 62 by 90 feet in size. This firm has gradually increased its shop on Fort St. until it became apparent that the expansion of the business could not properly taken care of there and that a move was inevitable. Therefore, when the opportunity came to secure this factory, it was taken up, although the change takes the business outside the central business district somewhat.
