E. P. Wright, of Wright, Kay & Co., retail jewelers, has been selected as one of the divisional chairmen in the Greater Detroit million-dollar campaign by Charles F. Kettering, general chairman of the campaign, who says he is picking a group of representative business and professional men to serve as his aids. These men will pick the committee chairmen and other campaign workers in their divisions.

A warrant was sworn out recently by Wright, Kay & Co., Detroit, Mich., for the arrest of George Parrish, charged with the larceny by conversion of a diamond ring valued at $394. Mr. Wright said that Parrish had been a customer of the firm, and had an account with them. One day he bought a ring and had it charged to him, and then left Detroit.

Celebrates Golden Anniversary with Detroit Firm

DETROIT, MICH. , Feb. 1.- A. W. Buchbinder on Jan. 15 celebrated his 50th anniversary with the house of Wright, Kay & Co. and its predecessors. The event was marked in many ways but none more pleasing to Mr. Buchbinder than the action of a number of his New York friends who had dealt with the house since he joined in 1871. They sent him a handsomely engrossed memorial testifying to their long standing friendship.

A respectably dressed man entered the store of Wright. Kay & Co. last week and insisted upon giving a vocal entertainment while the store was filled with customers. The firm turned the fellow over to the patrol wagon.

This week Wright, Kay & Co. have given up one of their large windows to the presentation of statuary. Some six or eight large and artistically carved figures are set off in a handsome manner. In the background are hung a few fine oil paintings. The window is the most elaborate in the city, and is a model of good taste and artistic trimming.

A well-dressed woman, giving her name as Lillian Layman, and her address as 304 Second Ave., is believed to be a clever woman crook who is concealing her real identity under a fictitious name. She was arrested Wednesday noon by Detectives High and Larkins, who were called by a salesman with Wright, Kay & Co. The salesman recognized her as the same woman who, three weeks ago, had stolen a valuable gold chain while he was waiting upon her. After she left the store he followed her and she went into Traub Bros.’ store, just across the street. Word was then sent to the police. She created a scene in Police Headquarters when efforts were made to search her, and threatened to go into hysterics. She pleaded to be released on the ground that she was living with a prominent Detroit business man, who is married, and said her arrest would get him into trouble. This excuse availed her nothing, and she was held. In addition to the chain she stole from Wright, Kay & Co. three weeks ago she exchanged a cheap charm of the Modern Woodmen for a valuable Masonic emblem, leaving the cheap one in the tray and slipping the valuable one into her bag when the salesman’s attention was attracted elsewhere. She is also charged with stealing two pins valued at $15 from E. J. LeHeup, 343 Woodward Ave., and a silver mesh bag from J. Friedberg & Son, 210 Woodward Ave. A pawn ticket from The Hub, in Providence, was found in her possession. She will be photographed by the police and her picture sent to other cities for identification.

A large force of men has been put to work at the new building to be occupied by Wright, Kay & Co. When the alterations and decorating are completed this firm will have one of the finest stores in the United States. Members of the firm have visited New York, Philadelphia and Chicago getting ideas, the best of which will be embodied in the arranging and beautifying of the new premises.

D. B. Bancroft, manager of the watch repairing department at Wright, Kay & Co.’s, Detroit, is a busy man. His firm are watch inspectors for the Michigan Central Railway. This brings under his care over 900 watches which have to be given a weekly rating. Mr. Bancroft thinks theirs is about the largest single inspectorship in the country. However this may be, there can be no question but that he has his hands full every day.

Death of David C. Kay

Former Detroit Jeweler Passes on at His Home in That City

Detroit, Mich., June 30.—David C. Kay, for a number of years a partner in the firm of Wright, Kay & Co., retail jewelers, and later associated with the Freeman, Delamater Co., died at his home here on June 26,

He was born at Galt, Ont., Aug. 31, 1859, coming to Detroit in 1886 and became associated with Wright, Kay & Co., one of the leading retail jewelry establishments in the city, and of which his brother, John, was one of the founders. He continued in this connection until 1898, when he resigned to become secretary and treasurer of the Freedman, Delemater Co. In 1916, when the company dissolved, Mr. Kay entered in the ordinance department, serving during the World War.

In 1896 he married Miss Belle Delamater. She and one son, Edwin; one daughter, Katherine M.; three brothers, John, of Detroit, and Robert and William, of New York, are the survivors.

Detroit jewelers regret to learn of the recent death of Franklin A. Kelsey who, previous to his retirement in 1917, was connected with Wright, Kay & Co., retail jewelers on Woodward Ave. The end came in Florida where he had gone a few weeks ago.
