J. E. Caldwell & Co. are displaying the prizes to be awarded at the Schuylkill Navy Regatta, June 17, 1911. The trophies are shields on oak boards, the center showing the figure of an oarsman. Surrounding the center figures are the enameled flags of all the clubs forming the association.

J. E. Caldwell & Co. are the manufacturers and designers for the silver cups to be awarded as prizes by the West Jersey Horse Show at their annual meet at Collingswood, N. J., June 18 and 19.

Members of the J. E. Caldwell & Co. Association, composed of employes of that well known jewelry firm, elected the following officers for 1925-26 at their annual meeting: Oscar A. Ritter, president; Walter Bossert, first vice-president ; James J. Webster, second vice-president; Frank A. S. Siddall, secretary; Miss Helen Hollis, assistant secretary ; Clarence M. Taylor, treasurer; William Humphries. assistant treasurer; executive committee, Mrs. Julia T. Worthington. Miss Maude I. Dunlap, Miss Ruth Paige, Lester M,. Coburn, Otto Mott, Alfred Arning, Francis W. Beggs, W. A. Morgan. The association will soon begin the work of outlining its Fall and Winter activities. Its Spring outing was the most successful from every viewpoint yet held.

The first afternoon’s sale of the collection of clocks, art and fancy goods the stock of J. E. Caldwell & Co., Philadelphia, Pa., sold under the direction of the Underwriters Salvage Co., American Art Galleries, this city, last Thursday, netted about $1,754. One of the purchasers procured a sterling Monteith bowl for $70 and a silver hot water kettle on a stand for $57.50. Twelve silver gilt coasters sold for $65. Another purchaser paid $40 for a large Tiffany Favrille glass jar. French and English table silver was also among the articles sold. The Caldwell firm suffered from a fire last year.

Death of George R. Wheeler

Philadelphia, Pa. Jan. 29. George R. Wheeler, buyer for J. E. Caldwell & Co., died at the Hahnemann Hospital last night from shock following an operation for a cancerous growth in the stomach. Mr. Wheeler had been ailing for over a year past, and though his death was not unexpected it was a shock to a host of friends in the trade. He was removed to the hospital from his home in Germantown Thursday, and it was determined to perform an operation as a last recourse to save his life.

Mr. Wheeler had been in the employ of J.E. Caldwell & Co. for over 20 years. For the past 12 years he occupied the position of buyer of electro plated ware, leather goods and silverware. He was popular throughout the trade and was highly thought of by his employers. He was a prominent and active member of the Jewelers’ League. He is survived by a widow, a daughter of Judge Briggs, of New York, and two children.

The funeral will be held Wednesday from his late home, and will be attended by a number of the employes of J. E. Caldwell & Co. and other jewelers. A meeting will be held by the salesmen of the firm to adopt suitable resolutions of regret, which will be engrossed and presented to Mrs. Wheeler.

Henry Bouw, formerly employed as clockmaker by J. E. Caldwell & Co. , has opened an office at 424 Real Estate Trust building, this city, where he is equipped to repair clocks.

PHILADELPHIA

Walter Kruse, of Raleigh, N. Car., is visiting relatives in the city. Mr. Kruse, who is a brother of Herman Kruse, for many years a watchmaker with J. E. Caldwell & Co., went to North Carolina as a watchmaker a number of years ago and recently went into the retail jewelry business for himself.

It is announced that Clarence E. Caldwell, of J. E. Caldwell & Co., who sailed for Europe, last week, from New York, will make his home abroad permanently.

J. Albert Caldwell, of J. E. Caldwell & Co., recently returned on one of the American liners from a purchasing trip m Europe. He says that business in England is in a fairly prosperous condition, and that manufacturers are hopeful of an improvement in the near future. There has been a partial recovery from the temporary depression that followed the collapse of the London boom in South African and Australian gold mine stock. Mr Caldwell reports the china industry as flourishing.

PHILADELPHIA

Edward W. Schurmann, for nearly forty years a watch maker and jeweler at 147 North Sixth Street, died last month. Mr. Schurmann was born in Germany in 1831, and came to this country when a young man, connecting himself with Caldwell & Co., of this city, where he remained seven years. About 1860 he started in business with an elder brother, who died in a few years, since which time Edward Schurmann conducted the business alone, working up a large trade. He was well-known and respected, and Was prominently connected with the various industrial, beneficial and social organizations.

William R. Eisenhower, a member of the firm of J. E. Caldwell & Co., was the victim of an icy pavement last week, falling and breaking his arm. To cap the climax, a few days later his limousine was stolen from near his home.
