Re: Information Regarding J.E. Caldwell & Co.
The partnership of James E. Caldwell & Co., the extensive retail jewelers on Chestnut street, above Ninth, expired on March 31 by limitation. Steps were immediately taken to re-form the co-partnership, which will run for three years from March 31 last. The members of the new firm are the same as of the old, as follows: J. Albert Caldwell, Joseph H. Brazier, Hugh B. Houston, Fred’k Shaw, R. Nelson Caldwell and James Riley, general partners, with the estate of James E. Caldwell, deceased, as special partner, represented by Sarah C. Caldwell, J. Albert Caldwell and Richard A. Lewis, the executors. The interest of Mr. J. H. A. Davidson in the business of the house is continued under the new arrangement. It is evident that the affairs of the previous partnership were in a very satisfactory condition, as the business of the house has been continuously large for years. The articles of the new partnership set forth that the general nature of the business intended to be transacted is the manufacture, importation and sale of watches, jewelry, silverware, diamonds and fancy goods generally.

Arrest of a Cuban May Explain Jewelers’ Mysterious Losses
PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Feb. 3.— Dr. D. H. Monk, reputed to be a member of a wealthy Cuban family, was arrested, late Saturday night, charged with the larceny of jewelry worth $650, from J. E. Caldwell & Co.
The method Dr. Monk is alleged to have used is that he would enter the store and ask to see jewelry. While the clerk’s back was turned, he would take a ring, a scarf pin or some other piece and slip it up his sleeve. Occasionally he would purchase something. During the last three or four months articles worth more than $1,000 have been missed. The store detective watched every customer, but still jewelry continued to disappear.
Finally, the case was put into the hands of a detective agency, and soon suspicion rested on the Cuban. For two weeks he was followed. Saturday, a warrant was sworn out before Magistrate Cunningham, charging him with stealing the jewelry. During the time Dr. Monk was being watched, he was followed to several pawn shops and from them the greater part of the missing articles has been recovered. It is probable a woman will be arrested. She is supposed to have been an accomplice.

Re: Information Regarding J.E. Caldwell & Co.
A unique horological curio attracted considerable attention while exhibited for a few days last month in the window of J. E. Caldwell & Co. The exhibit was the watch of Charles I of England, made for the King by Robert Seignior, of London, in 1640. After King Charles was beheaded in 1649, it came into the hands of Charles II, then Prince Charles. On September 3, 1651, after the battle of Worcester, the watch was taken from the Prince’s coach, which had been abandoned in his flight. It thus fell into the hands of Cromwell who retained it until his death. At the restoration, after Charles II was crowned, Cromwell’s goods were disposed of by auction sale, and this watch was obtained by Joseph Kippling, Overstone House, Northants, an ancestor of the present owner. It has been retained in his family and handed down as an heirloom since that date. It strikes the hour on a bell and also strikes an alarm. It is a verge movement and is a pair-case watch, the outer case being leather encrusted with nails. The inner case is silver, pierced and engraved very beautifully.
