Jewelry Store Thieves Active in the City of Brotherly Love

Philadelphia, Pa., Dec. 22.—The big jewelry store of Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co., as well as a number of other stores throughout the city, was robbed during this week of diamonds and jewelry aggregating altogether several hundred dollars in value by expert thieves who worked successfully in the holiday crowds. Two of the most daring robbers, Frank Hall and Charles Wilson, of New York, were “shadowed” by Detective Tate in Snellenburg’s store. They were followed to Wanamaker’s and thence to Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co.’s. Upon leaving the last establishment the suspects went to a pawnshop where they were arrested while disposing of four diamond cuff buttons and several diamond stick pins. They were held in $1,000 bail each for further examination.

THE TRAPPIST WHO GOT MARRIED

MODERN EDITION OF MARIA MONK

CHOICE READING FOR SIR THOMAS HENLEY

One of the leading South African dailies, a few weeks ago (says the 'Southern Cross' of Capetown), reproduced with great gusto, as did the
Dunedin and other New Zealand papers, the following report from a section of the London Press:

''A former Trappist monk, Father Alberic, now known to the world as Mr. James Cornell Biddle, a member of one of Philadelphia's oldest and
richest families, is the chief figure in a romance which culminated yesterday in his marriage to Miss Mary Lena Gaines, of Warrenton, Virginia.

''The couple are bound for 'Paradise,' the fine old Virginian estate belonging to the bride, where they will make their permanent home.

''For thirty years, the bridegroom lived a life of perpetual silence in seclusion, penitence and prayer at the Trappist monastery situated at Broad
Knoll, Gethesmane, 48 miles south of Louisville, Kentucky. Daily there he performed certain manual tasks and contemplated the graves made ready for each monk, dedicating the remainder of his time to studying the early Christian writers. A year ago he renounced his vows, having reached the conclusion that 'the Protestant or Evangelical form of Church government was the primitive form.'

' 'I was influenced,' he said, 'by the writings of St. Paul, and became convinced that celibacy was not obligatory for the clergy.'

'Mr. Biddle, after the marriage ceremony received reporters, to whom he repeated over and over again that his was not a 'Garden of Allah' romance. 'In the Garden of Allah, '' he observed, the monk took his step against his conscience. In my case I am absolutely at peace with my conscience. ' The bridegroom gave his age as 52 and the bride as 48.'

THE TRUTH

We have now received a copy of the English weekly, 'Plain English,' which completely exposes this 'latest example of American fiction.'

It is true (says 'Plain English') that the bridegroom belongs to a 'rich and old family.' His parents are leading stockholders in one of the largest
jewellery firms in the world, namely, Messrs. Bailey, Banks and Biddle. Some years ago his relations, who are Protestants, had him certified in
the usual way as a lunatic. In one of his lucid moments he was admitted to a retreat house conducted by Catholics, where he could harm no one,
and where it was hoped prayer and study might improve his condition. But he was never anything but a useless humbug. His relations withheld
his money from him, with the under standing that on emerging from his retreat as a Protestant he could have it.

He was apparently under the delusion that he was a Trappist sworn to silence, and several priests, who observed his conduct and his refusal to
speak, considered that he was as mad as ever. Annoyed at their attitude, he left the retreat house for the woman he afterwards married.

The 'Paradise' fine old Virginian estate belonging to the bride is simply a brick house of Colonial period surrounded by a few cornfields in the
midst of a negro settlement. As, the property is mortgaged for two-thirds of its value the charming bride seems to have trapped her 'Trappist'
with considerable advantage to her self.

But in the meantime grave scandal has been caused by the suggestion that the bridegroom was a Trappist monk. The general public may be unaware that the Cistercian Order, commonly called the Trappists, frequently under takes the care of victims of drugging or intemperance. But, to say the least, it is unfortunate that the good monks should have scandal brought upon their Order because a semi-lunatic believes himself to have been a monk. In so doing, Mr. Biddle has copied the notorious Maria Monk, who, as an inmate in a rescue home, supposed herself to be a nun, after she 'escaped' and resumed her immoral life.

A history of Bailey, Banks & Biddle from their own website:

1832
On September 10, 1832, Bailey & Kitchen, the name of Bailey, Banks & Biddle at the time, was founded by Joseph Trowbridge Bailey and Andrew Kitchen in Philadelphia. This founding date makes us the oldest nation-wide jeweler in America.

1857
In 1857, we designed the inaugural invitations for President James Buchanan, producing many of the inaugural invitations for subsequent Presidents as well.

1860
On December 25, 1860, a silver mug and plate were created and presented to President-elect Abraham Lincoln.

1861
In 1861, the Confederate States of America contacted Bailey, Banks & Biddle to commission a one-cent piece designed by Robert Lovett. Designed with a woman’s head with a topknot cap and a reverse bearing a wreath made from cotton, tobacco, corn, and rice. Lovett made 12 sample coins and hid them in his cellar afraid of Union authorities. 9 or 10 coins remain and one was auctioned by Bowers & Marena in June of 1984 for $11,500. Taking no sides in the war, we also created presentation swords for General Meade and General Ulysses S. Grant from the Union.

1865
On April 14th 1865, President Lincoln was assassinated and Bailey & Co. was commissioned to create a mortuary medal for the occasion.

1866
In 1866, Eli Wescott Bailey retired and Joseph T. Bailey II took over. Joseph Bailey crossed the Atlantic 140 times. He loved big game hunting and for months at a time lived and hunted with the Indians. In 1871 he was forced to flee Paris during the German siege. One of his daughters became a European Countess.

1868
In 1868, Bailey, Banks & Biddle created a snuff box from the rafters that supported the roof of the Hall of Independence on the 4th of July, 1776 and trimmed it with gold. It now resides in the Smithsonian.

1878
On March 1st, 1878, Bailey and Co. officially changes their name to Bailey Banks & Biddle.

1900
1900 - The late 1800's and early 1900's saw the expansion of Bailey, Banks & Biddle's insignia department. The Congressional Medal of Honor, the first 40,000 Purple Hearts ever awarded, and class rings for West Point and Annapolis were produced for almost a century. As the official designer of medals, ribbons and honor awards for the U.S. Government and its military and naval academies, Bailey, Banks & Biddle struck thousands of medals.

1904
In 1904, we created and updated the final version of the Great Seal of the United States. The great seal is used to seal more than 2,000 important government documents, treaties, and Ambassador appointments every year. In addition, the great Seal can be found on every United States dollar bill and all military uniforms.

1905
In 1905, Bailey Banks & Biddle designed and created the modern-day Medal of Honor.

1902
On April 30, 1902, First Lady Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, champion of women’s rights, purchased a brooch from Bailey Banks & Biddle that she wore as First Lady in 1912.

1915
Tradition dictated that the ancé of a West Point graduate was to wear a miniature of her husband’s class ring designed by Bailey, Banks & Biddle as her engagement ring. When Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed to Mamie and she heard of this tradition, she balked. She wanted a miniature of "nothing". She wanted a full-size copy of “the real thing”. Upon hearing of Mamie’s wishes, Bailey, Banks & Biddle complied. The First Lady wore this everyday ring for the rest of her life.

1917
In 1917, we were contracted to produce the first Pilot Wings that would be awarded to Naval Aviators.

1926
In 1926, Bailey Banks & Biddle produced the Distinguished Flying Cross. These were exclusively rewarded to any of officer or enlisted man in any branch of the Armed Forces that distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight.

1932
In 1932, We designed and made two more military awards for bravery and merit, the Silver Star, and the Bronze Star. The Silver Star we made was awarded to General Douglas MacArthur.

1932
In 1932, Bailey Banks & Biddle was contracted to create the first 40,000 Purple Hearts that were presented to all qualified recipients from previous wars.

1981
October 1981 - President Ronald Reagan was presented with an inkwell set created by Bailey Banks & Biddle at the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia.

1989
In 1989, The Philadelphia Liberty Medal presented to world leaders who have demonstrated leadership of vision in the pursuit of liberty, was designed by Bailey, Banks & Biddle. Some of the recipients include Thurgood Marshall in 1992 and F.W. deKlerk and Dr. Nelson Mandela in 1993.

Joseph T. Bailey, Head of Famous Jewelry House, Is Dead at Philadelphia

Philadelphia, Feb, 4. Joseph Trowbridge Bailey, president of the Bailey, Banks A Biddle Company, jewelers, died yesterday shortly after midnight at the home of his son. Major Charles Weaver Bailey, 2190 DeLancey street. Death was due to pneumonia after a brief Illness. At his bedside were Mrs. Bailey and the members of the family.

Joseph T. Bailey was born In Philadelphia March 29, 1835, of English ancestry, and was educated in private academies. In 1851 he began working for his father, a man who felt that the only way in which to learn any business was for one to "start at the bottom and go up." So young Bailey entered the store as a clerk. As he remlniscently said in later years, he "used to open the door" in the morning.

He was expert with rifle and pistol, and was never happier than when fishing or hunting in the Canadian woods or Rocky mountains. Big game hunting was his delight and he possessed many trophies testifying to his skill as a marksman. For months at a time he lived and hunted with the Indians, who always found in him a true friend and a loyal companion.

In 1871. during the German siege of Paris, in the Franco-Prussian war, Mr. Bailey, who was at that time in Paris on business, was forced to flee the city, along with many of the inhabitants.

Mr. Bailey was the eldest son of Joseph Trowbridge Bailey, the founder of the present house of Bailey, Banks & Biddle, which began business at 136 Chestnut street, under the name of Bailey & Kitchen, in October, 1832.

The son of a wealthy Philadelphia contractor is under arrest at Annapolis, Md., charged with burglaring the branch store of the Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co., Philadelphia. The firm does a large business with midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy and carries at the branch a large stock of swords, class jewelry, rings, etc. A large number of articles of jewelry and some money taken from the store were found in the youth's rooms and he admitted the theft, telling the police he easily opened a rear window with a nail-puller and entered the Bailey, Banks & Biddle place and an adjoining tailor shop. The boy's father has gone there to extricate the lad, if possible. The boy says he was inveigled into the robbery by an older man for whom the police are searching. The Bailey, Banks & Biddle firm is angry, not only over the robbery but the mischief done several valuable swords designed for presentation purposes.

THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION - PHILADELPHIA 1876

Adjoining the Gorham Co., is the pavilion of that long-established house of Baily & Co., of Philadelphia, founded in 1830. Their exhibit is extremely attractive, and is valued at $250,000. Beside the raised, they do much in the flat repousse, delicately executed from chaste and elaborate designs. They have a very elegant dinner and tea set at $15,000. They also present an extensive display of costly diamonds without a flaw. One case of diamonds, &c., is valued at $200,000. One grand sapphire is twenty-nine carats weight. They employ a large capital, and give constant employment to 100 hands.

Another extensive establishment in Philadelphia, is that of Robbins, Biddle & Co., manufacturers of sterling silver ware, plain, and in repousse. They present a handsome assortment of ladles; fish, salad, and berry sets; knives, forks, &c. Some of their silver has a very rich satin finish. The house has been established about twelve years, and gives employment to forty-two families. They use a capital of $300,000. Their gold Roman bands, crosses, pendants, &c., are richly finished, and of very chaste designs.
