THE CARD OF C. D. PEACOCK, DATED 1837

The issue of this card, bearing the date of 1837, seems to warrant special notice, in order that it may not be improperly placed with the series of Hard Times Tokens. Elijah Peacock (d. 1889), grandfather of the present Charles Daniel Peacock, who issued the card, founded the business in 1837, and to this event the date refers. It has no other connection with the “ Hard Times ” period. Elijah Peacock was succeeded by his son, C. D. Peacock (d. 1903), and the latter by his son, C. D. Peacock, Jr.

The first issue was made about 1900, of which there were 10,000 struck in copper and 4 in silver. The second card, issued about 1902, carried the same reverse as the first issue, but a new obverse die was cut having the date in the outer circle, keeping company with the legend. Of this variety, 7,750 were struck in copper and 1 in silver. All of the dies were cut by the Gorham Manufacturing Co. The obverse die of the second issue was broken, and when a third issue of 10,000 was ordered in 1906, a new obverse die was made, differing slightly from that of the second issue; this was engraved by an employee of the present C. D. Peacock.

C. D. Peacock Mysteriously Robbed of $2,500 Worth of Jewelry

Chicago, Ill., Dec. 23.—A daring diamond robbery well planned and boldly carried out between 8.30 and 9.30 Tuesday night, leaves C. D. Peacock short a tray of choice rings valued at $2,500.

The finer goods are shown at a separate counter; the less expensive at the left side of the store, near the entrance. It was in the less expensive goods the theft occurred, but the robbery was a wholesale one. The firm has twelve compartment cases of these goods, numbered from 1 to 6 and repeated in D 1 to D 6. The cases are about 7x9 inches in size. When Ross Geeting checked the goods at 8.30 P.M., Tuesday, the rings were all there. At 9.30 the store closed for the night. When the store reopened, Wednesday morning, tray No. D 1, containing sixty rings, was missing.

About all the goods were of the firm's own make. Thursday, C.D. Peacock offered a reward of $500 as follows:

The above reward for all, or proportionate share for recovery of part, will be paid by C. D. Peacock, northwest corner State and Washington Sts , Chicago, Ill.

Address all information to John D. Shea, Inspector and Chief of Detectives. Chicago, Dec. 21, 1893.

"This is the largest theft that has ever occurred in the house," said Mr. Peacock to The Circular correspondent. "We perhaps have a more perfect system of handling a large stock of valuable goods than any other house in the country, a fact I think that will be readily admitted by eastern houses. With every safeguard it is impossible to always circumvent ingenious thieves. We have no well defined suspicion as to whom the thieves in this case were, and for my part, with the start they have, I do not expect to recover the lost articles. Several parties looked at the rings between 8.30 and 9.30 P.M. Tuesday but it is a difficult matter for a person to accurately describe a large number of customers. We are obliged at this season of the year to largely increase our selling force and this gives added opportunity to thieves, as new men are less skilful than the older ones in caring for stock. It is possible the thieves are experts and in that case the stones may be removed and the gold melted, which will destroy the identity of the goods and render recovery impossible."

"There is probably no house in the country " added Manager Stevens, " that within a few hours of the robbery could give the detectives a list number of every ring in any one individual tray. Yet our reward, with numbers and descriptions, was issued immediately on the discovery of the loss."

A private detective of the firm had his attention attracted to a lady with a full wrap accompanied by a well dressed man who looked at the rings just before closing time. Other matters took him to a distant part of the store. During the examination a third person looked at the rings and presently left. The lady with the wrap paid a deposit on a small solitaire and was to return the following day but has not yet been heard from. It is thought possible that while the salesman's attention was diverted by No. 3 the lady concealed the tray in her wrap. The recollection of the appearance of the couple by the detective is the only evidence of a clew obtained so far.

Mr. and Mrs. Edmund F. Dodge, of Chicago, recently announced the engagement of their daughter, Dorothy, to Bernard Peacock Smith, associated with C. D. Peacock, Inc. The wedding date as yet has not been set, but it will take place early next Spring. Mr. Smith is the oldest grandson of Charles D. Peacock, and when he finished school about two years ago he became associated with C. D. Peacock, Inc., and since that time has been serving a sort of an apprenticeship in every department of the store in order to thoroughly familiarize himself with every branch of the business.

Chas. A. Woodmansee, who has been associated with C. D. Peacock for the past 20 years, will retire from the jewelry business about March 1, when he will leave to join his family in Florida, where he is now having his home built. Mr. Woodmansee has been in charge of the watch department for the past 12 years, and prior to that time was in the gold jewelry department. Before his association with Peacock's, Mr. Woodmansee was connected in the jewelry business at Omaha, Nebr., and Salt Lake City, Utah. He retires from the jewelry trade with perhaps as many friends as any man ever associated with the trade in this section, and the good wishes of all of them go with him to his new home.

C.D. Peacock is making a special window display of yachting cups and trophies. A large painting of a full-rigged ship—with sails in relief —attracts much attention.

An image of the State Street window of C.D. Peacock & Co., taken in November 1919:

The window display that month was devoted entirely to Sheaffer pens. Peacock's valued the window as being worth $2,000 a day to their business and the result of this display was a 100% increase in their fountain pen sales.

Chicago Pageant of Progress Exposition

Peacock's have decorated their windows as a compliment to the exposition in a most beautiful and instructive manner. Rather high, curved composition arches form frames at the back of each window section for a painting which depicts some phase of Chicago's progress. Peacock’s windows front on both Adams and State streets, consequently they have the space to make a splendid showing. The stationery window is on the Adams street side, and the painting back of the stationery display is a scene from the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. The section adjoining shows the Chicago river at Lake street bridge in 1900. An interesting reproduction of the small two-story brick building in which Peacock's did business in 1860 is shown. On the State street side the commercial display of Peacock goods is omitted and the floor space of the window is given over to a reproduction of the blue lake waters into which extends an excellent model of the municipal pier where the Pageant of Progress is being held. On the shore in the background a composition has been used to construct Chicago skyscrapers. These buildings are painted in the indefinite colors of office buildings, giving a life-like naturalness to the whole scene.
