Two men risked their lives Dec. 9, to save several thousand dollars’ worth of jewelry when fire destroyed a truck of the Bigelow, Kennard Co., at a filling station, 761 Commonwealth Ave. The fire started after the gasoline tank had been filled and as the nozzle of the hose was withdrawn some of the gasoline splashed down on the hot exhaust pipe. There was a flash of flame, and in a few minutes the entire truck was ablaze. Driver John Statkum, and his helper, John Dangora, forgot personal safety and pulled out scores of packages of jewelry from the truck. Although their faces and hands were burned and the gasoline tank was in danger of explosion they continued their work until the last package was out. The jewelry was placed under guard in the filling station and another carrier sent for.

Bigelow, Kennard & Co. Celebrating Centenary Anniversary

BOSTON, MASS. , Nov. 9.-Bigelow, Kennard & Co. is celebrating the centenary anniversary of its founding, for John Bigelow opened the original jewelry store in Boston across from the old State House just one hundred years ago. The founder had been for some years an expert watch repairer but this was his initial venture into a business of his own.

The organization has grown and changed enormously since those early days but its reputation for worth and integrity have not suffered in its metamorphosis from a one-man business to an establishment that sometimes employs as many as 150 people.

Banquet to John Russell in Celebration of 50 Years’ Service with Bigelow, Kennard & Co., Boston, Mass.

Boston, Mass., April 9—John Russell, who completed 50 years of service in the employ of Bigelow, Kennard & Co., Saturday, April 6, was tendered a banquet by the firm and employes at a Boston restaurant last night. After the banquet, at which the principals and 30 of the clerks closely associated with Mr. Russell were present, the presentation of a silver card case was made to him by Mr. Glover on behalf of the employes. A handsome present was
also given to him by the company.

Besides the members of the company there were also present Messrs. Heath, Glover, Ensign, Folsom, Holton, Parks, Poore, Vose, Shipp, Campbell, Zeigler, Prest, Swenning, Coleman, Tucker, Mystedd, Leonard, Oakes, Becker, Bersig, Timmerman, Robertson, Steverman, Houseman, Rabbell, Currier, Spencer, Swindells, Fawcett and Zearhan.

Mr. Russell’s genial nature and sterling qualities have endeared him to everyone at Bigelow, Kennard & Co.’s and they welcomed this opportunity of showing their appreciation of him.

He entered the employ of the company April 7, 1862, at the age of 20 years, being born and educated in Providence. When he entered the firm’s employ the store was on Devonshire St., where it had been for 30 years, the business then being divided into two parts—the wholesale and retail.

Soon after entering the company’s service Mr. Russell became connected with the wholesale department. Later he went into the retail department, the wholesale being abolished soon afterward. Only once, not long after he started, Mr. Russell was ill for several weeks, but since that time he has never missed a day.

Among the vacationists is F. E. Fulsom of Bigelow, Kennard & Co. He will return to his customary position as head of the silverware department in two weeks. Changes of considerable architectural importance have just been made in the spacious store of this company. Several rooms upstairs have been made into one large art department to house the large quantity of objects of vertu purchased by Alonson Bigelow during a recent trip to Europe. Allard Spencer is now in charge of this department.
