When thieves break jewelry store windows it is generally for the purpose of taking a tray full of diamonds, or a handful of watches, or snatching at a silver vase or something of unusual monetary value, but the thief who smashed the bulk window in the Chas. J. Maxwell & Co. jewelry store, 16th and Walnut Sts., last week, was of a different calibre. He stole a pistol which had been presented to Lieutenant Colonel C. P. Franklin, United States Ambulance Corps, in Italy. The weapon was presented to Colonel Franklin by Colonel Gabbio, of the Italian Army. The window was filled with relics and war souvenirs brought from the Italian front but the pistol was the only thing stolen. It is a blue steel automatic, .36 calibre and is inscribed with the Italian coat of arms. The thief broke the window with a padded brick and escaped undetected. The robbery occurred at night time.

Maxwell & Berlet, 13th and Walnut Sts., were picked out by Rufus Fleming, a colored man, last Wednesday for an attempt at “flim-flamming” which signally failed. Fleming represented that he had been sent by a very wealthy man to purchase a $250 diamond ring. While he was permitted to examine the ring the man’s supposed master was communicated with, the attempt at fraud was discovered and his arrest followed. It was later learned that he had attempted to fleece the Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co. and J. E. Caldwell & Co. in a similar fashion.

Unique Souvenir Cups Presented to Officers of the U.S.S. “ Chester.”





The 25 unique souvenir cups presented at the banquet given to the officers of the United States ship Chester, at Masonic Temple, Philadelphia, Nov. 20, were fashioned out of six-inch rapid-firing gun shells of the 1906 model. They have a sterling cover-shield, with a representation in bas relief of the old Chester City Hall, which was built in 1724.

Complimentary to the colors of the navy, the cups are encased in a box of blue and gold.

The cups were designed and made by Maxwell & Berlet.

Many jewelers interested in the banquet of the Philadelphia Salesmanship Club, which was held Oct. 19 in the Bellevue-Stratford, for the purpose of convincing those empowered with the decision the desirability of holding the National Salesmanship Congress in Philadelphia in 1917. New York City was a rival of Philadelphia’s for the honor of entertaining the congress, but it now appears certain that Philadelphia has won the distinction, as New York has withdrawn. The banquet was attended by about 500 men, and was addressed by E. J. Berlet, president of the Walnut Street Business Association and a member of the firm of Maxwell & Berlet. In addition to Mr. Berlet, Col. J. Warner Hutchins was one of the prominent jewelers present, as well as representatives of the several of large jewelry houses here.

TO MOVE CAR TRACKS

Philadelphia Jewelers Active in Delegation Which Visited the Mayor and Obtained Approval of Plan



PHILADELPHIA, Pa. Oct 19 — Walnut St. jewelers formed a large part of the delegation, representing the Walnut Street Business Association which has appeared before Mayor Thomas B. Smith in his offices at City Hall and received from him approval tor the removal of the car tracks on the thoroughfare and the probability of the widening of the roadway by the removal of the projecting steps and other obstructions.

The plan was outlined by E. J. Berlet, of Maxwell & Berlet, president of the Walnut Street Business Association. In the delegation, in addition to Mr. Berlet, were Charles J. Maxwell of the same firm, Col. J. Warner Hutchins, president of the Jewelers' Guild, and Ferdinand Keller, dealer in antiques and art goods.

It is the intention of the association to make Walnut St. an automobile thoroughfare which will necessitate the widening of the roadway and the removal of the tracks. The delegation asks that the car line be removed to Locust St. one short block to the south.

E. J. Berlet, of the jewelry firm of Maxwell & Berlet, and retiring president of the Walnut Street Business Association, was tendered a banquet Monday night of last week by his associates. The banquet was held in the northwest garden of the Bellevue Stratford Hotel roof. Mr. Berlet, who had just refused to accept a sixth term as president of the Walnut St. organization, officiated as toastmaster at the dinner. He told of the rise of Walnut St. to a place of great prominence in the business life of Philadelphia. Much of the prosperity of the Walnut St. shops, Mr. Berlet stated, was due to the activity of the Walnut Street Business Association. Among those present to do honor to Mr. Berlet were Congressman William S. Vare, Congressmen-elect J. Washington Logue and George W. Edmonds, and Director of the Department of Wharves, Docks and Ferries George W. Norris. Several addresses eulogizing the recipient of the dinner were made.

Berlet, of the jewelry firm of Maxwell & Berlet, Thirteenth and Walnut Streets, is the energetic president of the Walnut Street Business Men’s Association, formed for the purpose of securing improvements in that street, which is now largely devoted to business. The association is at present using its efforts to secure better lighting facilities, as the street has been very deficient in this respect.
