Increasing business has made it necessary for the Florence Manufacturing Company, of Florence, Mass., to increase the size of their factory and the company is now erecting a two story brick building, L-shaped, which measures 80 x 60 and 60 x 40 feet. The addition will give 20,000 square feet of additional space, and is expected to be ready for occupancy by July first. Part of the new building will be used in the manufacture of aluminum goods, including brushes and trays. The company reports that their enameled goods are at present the most popular line.

OWENS BROTHERS

A progressive Boston firm is that of Owens Brothers, which started a few years ago in a small way and has developed sufficient business to move into new quarters at I9 Washington Street, where the firm has 2,500 square feet of space. The firm manufactures printing and seaside specialties which include trays, book marks, etc., and also deals in all classes of aluminum novelties. At the last Mechanics’ Fair in Boston, Owens Brothers had the exclusive right to sell aluminum goods, and this summer they will have a booth at Crescent Beach, a summer resort, of Boston. The booth will contain 80 square feet of floor space, and will be open from June Ist to the last week of September. Something novel recently manufactured by Owens Brothers, were some aluminum cards, on one side of which were printed the portrait of Edward P. Shaw, a candidate for Congress from the Sixth Congressional District of Massachusetts, and on the back of the card was Mr. Shaw's record in public life. Owens Brothers believe that this is the first time aluminum has entered the political arena.

NOVELTIES FOR I896

During the past months novelty dealers and manufacturers have been so busy disposing of goods that they have had no time to originate new designs, but now that the holiday season is over with, there are prospects of returning ingenuity. The Scovill Manufacturing Co., the W. H. Kemp Co., the Aluminum Novelty Co., Reymond & Gottlob, and other manufacturers and dealers, intend to put new goods on the market. It has been the custom of novelty producers to await the appearance of something novel in silver and then copy it in aluminum, but it is now time that aluminum should be a leader. Put your wits together and bring out something new regardless of what has been done in other metals.

Frederick Koch & Co. of 43 Centre Street, New York are making a five-inch aluminum ruler that is in great demand. The agents of a certain brand of whiskey are sending thousands of these rulers broadcast, and the Pittsburgh Times and a western paper are using them as a free premium to subscribers. Mr. Koch reports an increased trade in medals and holiday articles.

The Scovill Mfg. Co., Waterbury, Conn., have placed on the market an attractive line of aluminum goods that will undoubtedly find a ready sale. It includes artistic designs in hand-mirrors, photograph frames, cigar cases, card trays, match boxes etc., which to many are as beautiful in appearance as silver, but sell at considerably lower prices and possess the advantage of being very light in weight and not liable to tarnish. E. A. Thrall, 3 Maiden Lane, New York, is the New York agent for these goods and is making a fine display of them in his windows.
