WIFE MURDER IN ESSEX

On Monday morning a shocking case of wife murder occurred at Newport, Essex. The deceased, Emily Blythe, 26, had come recently to live there to be near her mother, and was near her confinement. Charles Allen Blythe, the alleged murderer, is 33, and a native of Colchester. He was a travelling jeweller and betting man, and only came home occasionally. He arrived at Newport on Saturday night, and early on Sunday morning a neighbour heard a fall in Blythe's house, and subsequently Blythe was seen outside in an excited state waving his arms, and he told deceased's brother that he had shot Emily, who was found lying dead on the floor in her bedroom. Blythe handed to the police a five-chambered revolver, saying it was loaded. One chamber had recently been discharged. The prisoner had been in Bethlehem Hospital three months since Christmas, and also in the Highgate Infirmary, and it was said that he had attempted suicide and to strangle his wife, who got him released from Bethlehem on her own responsibility, but he came out of Highgate Infirmary unexpectedly. The jury returned a verdict of "Wilful murder," and the prisoner was committed for trial.

The watch and jewellery establishment of Mr. J. A. Gorst, Witton-street, Norwich, was completely gutted by fire early this morning, and the large stock totally destroyed. The cause of the outbreak is at present unknown.

PICKFORD & DRAPER

Ipswich


On Thursday, at the Ipswich Police Court, Messrs. Pickford and Draper, silversmiths, were fined £50 for neglecting to take out a silversmiths' license. The defendants have recently opened a second shop for the sale of their goods, and it was in respect to this that the charge was preferred. The contention for the defence was that a license for the second shop was not required by law.

W.R.Bullen Norwich

Hello, this is little extra information to go with a post loaded in this section by "Dognose". That reference is:

My information includes a synopsis of the "history" on the Bullens jewellers website.

W.R Bullen was "William Redgrave Bullen" who had established businesses in tailoring and footwear before taking over an existing jewellery firm and moving it into the footwear "shop" at 47 - 49 London Street. This was 1887.

"Norwich does possess the ‘Forget me not‘ clock on the tower of St Michael-at-Plea. The previous ‘useless’ mechanism was replaced in 1889 by William Redgrave Bullen who, according to the Norwich Mercury, had the dial plate repainted ‘a deep chocolate’. The date of 1827 suggests that an earlier dial was retained."

In 1898 "Bullens" moved their premises to the street corner, 29 London Street, the address indicated by "Dognose" and on the below spoon box silk (associated with 1925 hallmarked spoons). Note this silk states "watchmakers" in the business mix.



W.R.Bullen was incorporated as a ‘Limited Company’, on 28th May 1936 with the Bullen family holding the business until 2008 when it was sold to another local jewellery family. Four generations of Bullens had run the business but it continues to trade with the existing name.

On line, another Norwich "Bullen" concern turns up. This is "B.Bullen" at a "Royal Arcade"address and not far from London Street (Google Maps). That name is mostly on clocks but also on barometers. An alternative outlet? Coincidental name?
