JAMES JOLLY

Colchester

ATTEMPTED MURDER

A silversmith, named James Jolly, has been charged before the magistrates at Colchester with attempting to murder his wife, from whom he had been separated for some time. On Friday evening, in a condition of furious intoxication, he forced himself into the lodgings of his mother-in-law, with whom his wife resided. Bursting into the room where she was, he first dealt her a terrific blow on the face and then struggled with her and her sister. It was noticed that he had an open razor in his hand. The two women succeeded in wresting this from him, and the sister ran from the room with it; whereupon the man, taking of his coat, exclaimed, "I am ready for the gallows - I will be hung for you," and attacked his wife again, this time endeavouring to strangle her. He was, however, prevented by a neighbour, and his wife got away from him. On Monday It was testified that the prisoner was of unsound mind, he had been a teetotaller up to the time his wife left him, since that time had taken to drink. He was remanded pending an application to the Secretary of State for his removal in custody to a place where he may receive proper medical attention.
