John S. Holbrook Appointed to the Rhode Island State House Commission by Governor Pothier

Providence, R. I., Feb. 8—John S. Holbrook, vice-president of the Gorham Mfg. Co., was appointed by Governor Aram J. Pothier on Tuesday as a member of the Rhode Island State House Commission to fill the vacancy caused by the recent resignation of James M. Scott. The nomination of Mr. Holbrook for the office was sent to the State Senate in the afternoon. It was confirmed yesterday without a dissenting vote.

In making the nomination Governor Pothier announced that he had not consulted Mr. Holbrook in the matter, but that he had named him because he knew that he was a recognized authority on designs and statutes of various kinds, and that for that reason he believed that he was ideally fitted for the place.

After the confirmation by the Senate Mr. Holbrook announced that he had accepted the appointment. His appointment is for the unexpired term expiring Jan. 31, 1917.

At the Gorham Manufacturing Company all departments are running full capacity, the bronze department being especially busy with orders enough to keep it going for two years. Recently the company was awarded one of the largest orders for silverware ever made — that of 18,000 pieces of silverware for the new Hotel Baltimore, New York City. Special designs have been drawn and the order includes coffee and tea pots, platters, plates, sugar and finger bowls, pitchers and add pieces, and the designs are of such a character that the table settings may conform with the general scheme of decoration.

Edmund C. Mayo, who came to the Gorham Manufacturing Company last January as vice-president in charge of production, has been made general manager of the concern according to a statement made by Alfred K. Potter, vice-president and treasurer of the company. Mr. Mayo’s promotion comes in connection with the reorganization plans of the concern which have been under way for nearly a year.

Mr. Mayo has had nearly twenty years experience of executive character in manufacturing industries coming to Providence six months ago from the American Tube and Stamping Company of Bridgeport, Conn., where he had been president and general manager. He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1904, and previous to going with the Bridgeport concern, was general manager of the Worcester Pressed Steel Company.
