The Mace of the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees

The foot knob also has six panels, the main features being the arms of the Marquis of Londonderry in coloured enamel. On the boss in coloured enamel is a reproduction of the arms of the Bishop of Durham, commemorating the long association of the succession of bishops with Stockton-on-Tees. Of high workmanship throughout, the mace was designed and made by Joseph Fray. Ltd. of Birmingham, in collaboration with Mr. A. G. C. Woodroffe, of F. A. Woodroffe and Son, Ltd., who supplied it.

Alexander Cameron sent work to the Newcastle Assay Office from the 25th April 1828 until 8th November 1831. The above pair of tongs struck with the 1827 date letter are likely to be amongst the first of his silver assayed at Newcastle.

William Stalker and John Mitchison succeeded the business of John Kirkup in 1774. William Stalker had served his apprenticeship under John Landlands, and John Mitchison under John Kirkup. The partnership lasted until 1784 when Stalker gave up the trade, leaving Mitchison to carry on alone until his death in 1792.
