ARCHIBALD WHALE

King Street, South Shields

Archibald Whale, watchmaker and silversmith, of King Street, South Shields, died at the infectious hospital on Friday from which has stated to have been Asiatic cholera. He was taken ill on Sunday week last, and was attended by a doctor, but his condition became so serious that he was removed to the hospital. He was buried late on Friday night. It is said that deceased, who was fifty years of age, had been eating some imported fruit.

Samuel Hume

Jeweller and Silversmith 17 Elvet Bridge, Durham

I found 3 references for Samuel Hume in Durham trade directory PDF's:
Hume Samuel, 17 Elvet bridge, Durham jewellers
Hume Samuel, 17 Elvet bridge, Durham watch & clockmakers
Hume Samuel, watch maker, I7 Elvet bridge

Also the Index to obituaries in the "Durham Directory" 1910 has:
HUME, S., jeweller and silversmith of Elvet Bridge, Durham died 4 May 1909 (see M29/1)

"Hume, S." but of "North Road, Durham ", watchmmaker is referenced in our Forum by Dognose and below is the box silk that stimulated my "local" interest.

Apart from the death record there is little dating for Samuel Hume's working period. If the silver spoon and fork set that were in the silk lined box were always in the box, the item was retailed around 1898.
