The American office and salesroom are located at Nos. 377 and 379 Broadway; the foreign office is at No. 14 Fore street, London. England. The timber purchasing department and cedar mills of this company are located in Chattanooga. Tenn. There are more than seventeen hundred persons employed by this concern in the manufacture of pencils. The officers of the company are Emil Berolzheimer, president; Samuel Kraus. vice-president; Philip Berolzheimer. treasurer, and C. S. Braistead. secretary.
The reputation of the Eagle Pencil Company has been made and well established through the merit of its articles. it has always been the aim of this company to manufacture at moderate prices good goods. From time to time it has introduced various novelties and patented articles that have won for it an undisputed record as being the first in its line. It was the first to manufacture a pencil with an eraser rubber at the end. it was also the first to introduce the copying pencil. that has become such a necessity in the commercial world today.

Edmund Day, who, with his brother, Henry Day, was a pioneer in the manufacture of stylographic and fountain pens, died at his residence in Seymour, Conn., recently, after having been in ill health for seven years. He was stricken at that time while examining his orange groves in Florida. Mr. Day was born in West Springfield. Mass., on Dec. 12, 1831, being 90 years old at the time of his death. He was a Republican State representative in 1873-74 and Senator in 1884-85. After attending Yale college he went into the pen-making business with his brother, organizing the H. P. & E. Day Co. He married Miss Annie Melcher, of Dover, N. H., in 1863. He was a successful and active business man of Seymour, having held the following positions: organizer of and the first president of the Seymour Electric Light Co., president of the Seymour Trust Co.. president of the B. D. Rising Paper Co., Housatonic. Mass., director of the Seymour Mfg. Co., A. Matthews Mfg. Co., Rimmon Mfg. Co. Fourth National Bank. Waterbury, Conn.. Colonial Trust Co., Waterbury. He is survived by one son, William M. Dav, and two daughters, Mrs. C. M. French and Mrs. H. C. Edgerton, East Hampton, Conn. The funeral was held from his late home.

The manufacture of Gold Pens is comparatively a modern innovation. Their use in the United States dates back, however, for a period of twenty-five years, when their introduction met and successfully contended with the prejudices common to all new and useful improvements. Too many manufacturers have endeavored to supplant the good old fashioned quill and steel pen by placing upon the Market an article, which, though composed of the more costly material, proves utterly useless in a very short time, and loses even the value it possesses as precious metal until remelted and reformed for some useful and legitimate purpose. The superiority of the Gold Pen over all others, when skillfully and honestly made, is a fact long conceded. The Hon. Daniel Webster once wrote ; “It is indeed the only metallic pen worth using.”
Messrs. Mabie, Todd & Co. manufacture a larger variety, perhaps, than any other house in the country, and have obtained a reputation for the most reliable, durable, and pure goods. Mr. Mabie, the senior partner, with an experience of thirty-five years, is directly connected with the manufactory, and gives the Pencil Case department his entire time and attention.
Of the Gold Pen department, Mr. J. S. Bard, one of the junior partners, has had full charge for the past fifteen years, and an experience of much longer time. Only the most improved and costly machinery and the finest skilled labor are employed by this house, added to which a conscientious adherence to the principles of honor and integrity in all their dealings, renders it a fait accompli that they maintain the foremost position among the manufacturers of Gold Pens and Pencil Cases in the United States.
