KARL WALLNÖFER

Wien

An example of work and mark of Karl Wallnöfer:

The "W" in the impressed double eagle was one of the marks used by Karl Wallnöfer (ca. 1798-1872) Master 1820, who was later part of Wallnöfer & Söhne (1828-1838) and Gebr. Wallnöfer (1838-1856) with his father Franz Wallnöfer (Master 1800) and brother Franz Wallnöfer, Jr. (Master 1822). He stayed in business one more year (1857) before retiring.

The 'VR' (Vorrathsstempel) mark was used at Vienna from July 1807 to 1824, thus dating the above piece to the period 1820-1824.

Established in 1819. J.L. Herrmann were merged with Berndorfer Krupp just prior to the First World War, but it is thought that at some point in time to be in the hands of J.C. Klinkosch. Although Herrmann's were part of Berndorfer Krupp, it is thought likely that products were continued to be marked in their name up until the start of World War II.

Described 1876: 'K. K. Landesbefugte Fabrik von silber- und goldplatierten, dann Packfong- und Chinasilber- und echten Silberwaren.'

Example of the marks of J.L. Hermann:

The business was established in 1838 by Thomas Dub (Dubb) (b.22-12-1811 Volenice, Bohemia - d.19-3-1889 Vienna-Rudolfsheim) who had served his apprenticeship under Franz Friseck. Following the death of Thomas Dub in 1889, the firm passed to his son, Vincenz Carl Dub (b.c.1852 - d.15-3-1922) who had spent many years working alongside his father. Under V.C. Dub's leadership, the firm turned into one of the leading flatware manufacturers in Austria.

CARL WARMUTH I & II

Wien

Member joris wrote: The C.W mark will be that of Karl (or Carl) Warmuth, most likely junior. Karl junior began working alongside his father in 1897, and Karl senior retired in 1901, so there seems to be a period during which the mark may apply to either of them (although this may also be merely an ambiguity or error in the reference I am checking.) In any event, Karl jr. continued operation until after the change of markings in 1924, and always used a mark similar to this one.

The assay stamp is for 1840, but it was also used for 1841 and 1842, and a new one was not issued until 1843.
