MUTZ, MATZKA & Co.

Wien

Two former Austrian army officers who have been doing very well with the substitution trick in connection with valuable jewelry, have about run their course, according to advices from Vienna this week. One, Frederick Mutz, has been given three years’ hard labor and his confederate, Otto Matzka, is being hunted down on a warrant in North Africa. They traded as Mutz, Matzka & Co. By substituting metal shavings in a box they were enabled to victimize people with jewelry for sale. A revolving table was used in connection with the substitution, the box containing the jewelry disappearing and a substitute box containing the shavings taking its place unbeknown to the client who would see his box of “jewelry” placed in a bank for safe keeping, the key being handed over to him, An American who, as reported in The Jewelers' Circular recently, had his doubts of the two men and helped to expose them. He insisted on having the jewels valued and deposited with a bank before going to the firm’s office and signing contracts. They cleared out that night. Interest becoming unpaid, jewelry lenders insisted on opening up their boxes at the banks. They contained metal shavings and coal. It is estimated that the two young men disposed of around 20 boxes of metal scraps in substitution for the real jewel boxes. They paid handsome interest to their jewelry clients, until the fraud was exposed.

Hermann Ratzersdorfer (born 1817, retired 1881) was best known for his reproductions of silverware in earlier styles. His work was shown at the major 19th century exhibitions in Vienna, London and Paris. His working period was 1843-1881.

As from 1881 the business was continued by Hermann's son, Julius.

Hi Trev
Have added more another Ratzersdorfer mark on a box I have (posted on forum before) and an image of small enamel purfume bottle made by him ,the bottle has the mark in your earlier post.

The mark on my box seemed to be his first earlier mark.

Regards Guido.

DULCIATA

Austria

“‘DULCIATA” ART-CRAFT METAL GOODS are being exported to many parts of the world. They are silver-plated, nickel-plated, or chromium-plated metal goods of many kinds (except table cutlery) of which two complete lines per year have been offered. The reaction to the Austrian plated goods has been enthusiastic, and American visitors to Austria have brought back many of these articles under the duty-free travellers’ allowance. Rated American businessmen interested in contacting the Austrian manufacturer are invited to inquire at the Austrian Trade Delegate’s Office in New York, or at the branch office on the West Coast.
