Kramer - Paris - 1876
The following details of the arrest of a person charged with stealing a large quantity of valuable jewellery are given by a New York correspondent : – Franz Kramer, of 350, Rue St. Honoré, Paris, entrusted a quantity of jewellery, valued at one hundred thousand dollars, to a young Englishman, named James Henry Marriott, to dispose of. It is stated that Marriott tried to pawn some of the jewels in London, but, being afraid of arrest, he fled, leaving some of them behind. He went to America, where he was arrested. His companion, Marie Pereux, surrendered, and handed over a pair of earrings of 31 carats. On their lodgings being searched, the authorities found concealed in a seal muff a 36 carat solitaire, and in the man's trousers' pocket twenty four magnificent loose stones, besides a necklace with fifty-six brilliants, jewelled bracelets, watches, and sprays. One of the gems was estimated to be worth 50,000 dollars. When collected together the jewels fairly covered the police sergeant's desk. Marriott was held by the authorities to be liable to the charge of bringing stolen goods within the State, and on being handed over, was placed on board the steamer Britannic, which sailed for England.
