GEORGE BROOKS
Montreal, later, Santa Barbara, California
George Brooks was born George Rybnicek in 1925 at Brno, Czechoslovakia. He immigrated to Canada in 1931 settling in Montreal and started an apprenticeship with Henry Birks & Sons in 1948. In 1950 he transferred his apprenticeship to Georges Delrue, a French jeweller who had arrived in Montreal in 1947. George Brooks went into business on his own account at Montreal in 1957 and closed it in 1961, relocating to Santa Barbara, California, where he continued working until his retirement.

Dron, who is now established in a jewelry business ot his own in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, recently visited Boston and reports a good and rapidly increasing patronage. Mr. Dron was formerly in the employ of Jos. A. Williams, one of our prominent Washington Street jewelers.

A daring burglary took place at Smith’s Falls, Ont., recently when Robert W. Stacey’s jewelry store was entered and a large quantity of jewelry and other articles stolen. The Stacey family, living over the store, heard no sound. In all it is, estimated that over 400 articles were taken, and the loss is placed at several hundred dollars. No attempt was made to blow open the safe.

On Feb. 24 a man of 35, who has served several terms of imprisonment for theft and forgery, passed a bogus check for $50 on W. W. Tyrill, jeweler of St. Catharines, Ont., in part payment for a diamond ring valued at $200. The police have been looking for him for some time, and on Tuesday, the 9th inst. he was arrested at Niagara Falls, N. Y., and deported to Canada as an undesirable character. He was immediately taken into custody and on Wednesday, April 10, pleaded guilty and was remanded for sentence.
