JOHN A. NASH

182, Dundas Street, London, Ontario

John A. Nash - London, Ont. - 1928

An image of the shop-front of John A. Nash published in 1922:

A novel advertising stunt which brought big business was recently carried out at the John A. Nash jewelry store of Dundas St., London, Ontario. Using crisp $5 bills to focus attention, there was shown a window of unset rings, and in attractive card announcements the statement: “Remount Week,” and the offer to do free re-setting from any reset from $5 up. With these cards was another with the usual Nash epigram, “Any woman who sticks to the old style in jewelry is advertising her age,” and this proved a source of merriment as well as conviction to those stopping and reading and every passing woman was drawn to the window. The display included rough nuggets of different sorts of gold, red, white and green alloys, and a bar of pure gold from the royal mint at Ottawa. Pictures were shown of uncut stones and cutters at work. The effectiveness of the display was proved by the marked increase in the volume of business.

SEWELL

Cobalt, Ontario

During the night of April 3d Sewell’s jewelry store at Cobalt, Ont., was robbed of five rings valued at $280. An attempt was made to affect an entrance to the store by cutting a glass panel of the door, but this proving unsuccessful a stone was thrown through the side window. Several articles of glass and chinaware were broken, making a total loss of about $400. There is no clue to the identity of the thieves.

FREDERICK CLARINGBOWL

8, James Street South, later, 22, McNabb Street North, Hamilton, Ontario

Frederick Claringbowl, jeweler, Hamilton, has the sincere sympathies of the trade on account of the death of his wife, which occurred on the 1st inst. under peculiarly painful circumstances. Two days before Mrs. Claringbowl complained of illness and a doctor who was called in declared her to be suffering from an internal trouble requiring an operation. She was unable to withstand the shock and died shortly after having been operated on.

F. Claringbowl, the well-known jeweler, of Hamilton, Ont., recently changed his location, having removed from 8 James Street, South, to 22 McNabb Street, North. The new quarters afford an appreciable increase of space and are very handsomely equipped. A capacious window of plate glass provides fine frontal display facilities, and the interior furnishings are prettily finished in cherry and fancy glass. The lighting arrangements are abundant, consisting of an electrical and gas apparatus combined. The store is steam-heated, and includes a comfortable workroom and well-appointed optical department.

HARRY ARONSON

115, Craig Street West, Montreal

BOUND AND ROBBED

Montreal Jeweler Thrown into Coal Bin By Bandits Who Walk Away with Gems Valued at Over $7,000

Montreal, Can., June 21.—At about half past nine yesterday morning the jewelry store of Harry Aronson, 115 Craig St., W., was entered by two men who asked to be shown some diamonds. As Mr. Aronson, who was alone in the store, was producing the goods, one of the men presented a revolver and ordered him to come from behind the counter. He was then seized by the robbers, both of whom were armed, tied up with ropes and thrown into the coal bin in the rear of the store.

The men, who were joined by two others, secured diamonds and jewelry valued at between $7,000 and $8,000, and walked-off to an automobile which was waiting for them.

Mr. Aronson managed to free himself a few minutes later and at once notified the police.
