ROYAL CANADIAN MINT

Ottawa

Canadian Mint Making Cuff Links

Because making money is not as profitable as it used to be, the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa is diversifying its product line and this year moved into the jewellery market with a set of men's cuff links.

Operating in 1970 for the first time as profit motivated Crown corporation, the management found itself faced with a drastic drop in demand; production of Canadian coins dropped to 339 millions from 630 millions the year before.

The mint's current direct mail advertising brochure lists six different items, including the cuff links plated with gold or rhodium. The initial run of these was cautiously set at 400 and proved to be a wild under-estimate. Selling at $3.50 a set, orders for 25,000 sets have been received so far this year.

AUDIAS DUFRESNE

Montreal

Montreal Jeweler Attacked by Burglars Who Visit His Home

Montreal, Can., July 14—Audias Dufresne, a jeweler, living at 1463 Ontario St., E., was attacked by burglars at his residence on Monday and slightly wounded by a shot from a revolver.

Hearing a noise in his bedroom he went up and found a man going through a strong box containing papers and a few old coins. He asked what the intruder was doing and the latter replied: “Oh just looking through your papers.”

Mr. Dufresne rushed at the man who knocked him down. On getting to his feet he received a bullet wound from the revolver of another man whom he had not noticed when entering the room.

The shot grazed his temple and brought a flow of blood. The men ran from the house followed by Mr. Dufresne and others and made their escape.

R.F. LOUIS

1111, St. Lawrence Boulevard, Montreal

SHOOT AND ROB JEWELER

Bandits Escape in an Automobile After Obtaining Gems Valued at $2,000

Montreal, Can., Jan. 24.—This morning at about 10.30 o’clock, R. F. Louis, jeweler, of 1111 St. Lawrence Boulevard, was held up in his store by two armed men, shot in the arm by one of them and robbed of loose diamonds of the value of $2,000.

Mr. Louis was alone in his store when a young man entered and asked him to look at a watch he had purchased. While he was examining the watch a second man entered and presenting a revolver commanded Louis to put up his hands. The first man also produced a revolver and took up a position near the door.

“I won't give you anything,” said Louis, and then the man who was covering him reached towards him and pulled a package containing loose diamonds of the value of $2,000 from the jeweler’s inside breast pocket, at the same time firing his revolver, the shot piercing Mr. Louis’ arm.

The shot attracted the attention of Miss A. Costimer, who has a store next door, and of a passerby, who went to the jewelry store but were ordered away by the armed man at the door. They saw the two bandits run from the store and hastily drive off in an automobile which was waiting for them with a man at the wheel and another in the rear of the car.

Mr. Louis was removed to the hospital. Good descriptions have been given to the police of three of the men.
