JOHN WEBSTER

107, West Port, Edinburgh and possibly Peterhead

John Webster was noted as the Foreman at the Clockmakers, James Whitelaw, of Register Street, Edinburgh. Webster started business on his own account when he acquired the business of Alexander Breakenrig, 107, West Port, Edinburgh in c.1826, which he carried on until 1869. Prior to the appointment with James Whitelaw, Webster was known to have come from Peterhead, but if he ever worked in that town is thought to be unknown, but worth recording on the forum.

MCB noted the following:

JOHN WEBSTER

UK Census records show he was born in Peterhead in 1797 and his son James was born in Edinburgh in 1824. If John had worked in Peterhead prior to arriving in Edinburgh his time there as a freeman, assuming he was apprenticed, would have been relatively short.
The 1871 Census records show that he was still working as a watch and clock maker at 4 Salisbury Court Edinburgh after 1869. His son James was in the same trade.

ERNEST LOW

MCB noted the following:

ERNEST LOW
He was born c1845 in Inverurie the son of master shoe maker Ernest Low and his wife Ann and is recorded living with his parents in High Street there until 1861 by which time he had become an apprentice watch maker.
He was listed in 1871as a watch maker lodging in Fetteresso, Stonehaven with grocer William Reen.
No mark seems to have been registered at Edinburgh Assay Office for him and whether he actually made the silver cup he presented at the 1878 Stonehaven Horticultural Show or made his own watch cases must remain open to conjecture.
In 1881 he was recorded as a watch maker employing a man and boy and living in Fetteresso, now shown as Stonehaven New Town. He had married his wife Elizabeth and had an eight month old son.
As shown above David Beatie Greig had a full street address there in 1861which suggests Fetteresso had begun naming its other streets by 1891 when Ernest Low was listed as a watch maker at 27 Evan Street living with his wife Elizabeth and four children aged from 2-10 years.
He had moved by 1901 but not far. His address as a watch maker was then recorded as 25 Evan Street, Fetteresso. This is the last reference found for him.

Note:
Scotland’s 1911 Census records remain unpublished on the web.

DAVID BEATIE GRIEG

Stonehaven 3rd August 1887.

Source: Aberdeen Weekly Journal - 8th August 1887

Trev.

MCB noted the following:

DAVID BEATIE GREIG
He was born c1846 in Stonehaven the son of the watch maker David Greig and his wife Helen and continued to live with them at Anne Street, Fetteresso, Stonehaven until the 1861 Census by which time he had become an apprentice watch maker, presumably with his father.
By 1871 he had married his wife Mary and they were living at 39 Barclay Street, Fetteresso where, as a watch maker, he is listed employing one boy.
He had moved to Ann (sic) Street, Fetteresso by 1881, living there with his wife Mary and listed as a watch maker and jeweller.
The event of 1887 referred to above was presumably one cause of his leaving Stonehaven as the 1891 Census recorded him as a watch maker at 474 St George Road, St George in the Fields, Glasgow living with a new wife Isabella and children aged 5-13 years.
By 1901 he had become a watch repairer at 396 Parliament Road, St Rollox, Glasgow, which is the last reference found for him

MAGDALENE McGREGOR

Perth

ROBBERY OF JEWELLERS IN PERTH

On Monday evening or Tuesday morning, the premises occupied by Mrs Macgregor, Jeweller, Perth, were broken into, and a quantity of jewellery, to the amount of £200, was carried off. The burglars effected an entrance by the back-shop window; and the fact of there being eye-holes in the front window shutters, and gas kept burning in the shop, to aid the police in detecting depredators, does not appear to have disconcerted them. Fortunately, the most valuable portion of the stock was secured in an iron safe. No trace of the thieves has been obtained.

Source: Aberdeen Journal - 2nd March 1859

Magdalene McGregor was the daughter of Thomas Currie, a distiller, and Anne Sharp. She was born at Kirkcaldy in c.1805. She was married to the Jeweller, Robert McGregor, and continued the business at 40, George Strret, Perth, following his death on the 5th April 1848.

Magdalene McGregor died at Kinnoull on the 10th April 1865.

Deaths

At Sunnybower, Kinnoull, Perth, on the 10th Instant, Magdaline Currie, relicit of the late Mr Robert Macgregor, Jeweller, Perth.

Trev.

MCB noted the following:

ISAAC CONSTABLE
He was born in Perth c1835 the son of shoe maker Robert Constable and his wife Jane and was recorded in 1841 living with them at Methuen Street, Perth. He was still living with his parents in 1851 but at 50 High Street, Perth. Although he was only 16 years old he described himself as a jeweller.
The Post Office Directory for 1858 noted him in the same trade at 72 High Street and the 1861 Census living with his mother and grandmother at 28 High Street, Perth as a jeweller employing others. The Post Office continued to list him trading alone there as a jeweller until 1868.
He was shown in Directories for 1872 and 1874 trading as Constable and McGregor at 28 High Street and 40 George Street, Perth, the latter address having previously been associated with Robert and Magdalene McGregor (see previous post).
The last reference found for him is in 1878 as a jeweller at 101 High Street, Perth.
