Thanks Trev - a most fascinating read. And now my eyes are all squint. But a lot I didn't know. Am amazed at the the amount of human labour that still went into the plating process, By this stage I had pretty much thought most of it was stamped out quickly and with industrial precision. The idea of variable plating was new (incidentally have an everyday Walker and Hall rat-tail canteen from this period that would have benefitted from it - you know, the backs of the spoons). I especially love the Edwardian optimism, unfortunately so cruelly crushed by the Great War and the advent of stainless steel. I love the disparaging of cheap Birmingham solid silver wares. And yes, Bingham's little dig at Mappin and Webb delightful. Thanks Frank

PS give me Old Sheffield any day
