The Pairpoint Mfg. Co. Make a Fine Trophy

New Bedford, Mass., July 5.—The Pairpoint Mfg. Co. have had on exhibition in the corner window of William L. Kelley's jewelry store, an elegant prize cup which they have just completed for the Sioux Falls Fire Department for its Fourth of July contest. The piece is said to be one of the finest ever turned out at the Pairpoint works, being valued at S175. It stands 28 inches high from the table, on a circular ebony base, with fancy silver scroll inscription plate on its front. From this base rises the cup proper, acorn-shaped and having two horses’ heads projecting from the sides, with reins festooned across the front over a small projecting knob. The base has a plain burnished panel on which is engraved a hose reel. Around this panel is an engraved scroll also burnished.

The rest of the pitcher is of frosted silver ware. On the front of the body of the cup is a handsome emblematic group, consisting of ladder, boarding hooks, axe, trumpet, fireman's hat, bucket and lantern, with two shots of hose naturally festooned around and through it.

The recent addition to the plant of the Pairpoint Mfg. Co., New Bedford, Mass., is a model of fitness for the purpose for which it was erected. The main building is 100 x 80 ft. fronting on the highway, while two wings run back on each side from the main structure to the older buildings in the rear. A new engine of 350 horse-power has been put in with dynamos to supply the plant with electric lights, and greatly increased space allotted to the packing and stock department. The company have also fitted up a complete box and case factory, in which the vast number of boxes and cases used in the marketing of their goods is made. Taken in its entirety the plant of the Pairpoint Co. is now one of the best equipped of its kind in the country, and the management are to be congratulated on the enterprise they have shown and the unmistakable evidences of its return.

Geo. J. Cory, the former Chicago manager of the Pairpoint Mfg. Co. and who was later United States Consul at Amsterdam, on Thursday evening addressed the Liberal Club of Brooklyn on the topic of the Dutch in South Africa. It was essentially a pro-Boer argument.

Two trains left Montreal for Toronto on Monday evening, Nov. 14, by the Grand Trunk Line. The first train was wrecked at Murray Hill, Ont., and 12 passengers were killed outright and 10 very seriously injured. By pure chance and good fortune, A. R. Harmon. Canadian manager of the American Waltham Watch Co., and Geo. Chillas, Canadian agent of the Pairpoint Mfg. Co., went by the second train, and so escaped the accident and its consequences.

INDIVIDUAL TEA BALL

Image

Tea drinkers will appreciate the dainty little novelty illustrated herewith. It is really nothing more nor less than an individual tea ball. For fine
caravan teas for instance, where a minute’s longer steeping makes a marked difference in the infusion, this spoon will prove invaluable. Filled with tea and inserted in the tea cup of boiling water, one may at will have tea strong or weak. The article is one which will surely find a place at every tea table, and become more popular each day. The Pairpoint Mfg. Co., New Bedford, Mass., are the manufacturers.

Large Failure at New Bedford

Judge Lowell, in the United States circuit court in Boston Monday, appointed Clarence A. Cook, Lou M. Snow and Gilbert Allen receivers for the Pairpoint Manufacturing company of New Bedford, manufacturers of Britannia plated ware, glassware and wrapping paper. The liabilities are $500,000 with assets in excess of that sum. The capital of the concern is $1,000,000. About 3000 employes in the metal department with weekly pay roll aggregating $3,300 were discharged Monday. It is expected the glassware department and the paper mill will be kept running. The concern has branches in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Montreal.
