The Patent number would refer to the manufacturing method, a silver overlay on to a Bakelite base.

Although Robert Sawers Ltd. had their own mark (RS) registered with the Edinburgh Assay Office, this single 'S' mark was used when working as an outworker for other concerns. It has been noted on the wares of Brook & Son and Hamilton & Inches.
