The Toronto Silver Plate Co. have been taking stock since the first of the year, but started up again on the 21st inst. They took the opportunity while the machinery was not running of remodelling their factory in many respects, this being found necessary on account of their largely increased business. In addition to these changes they have added a lot of new and expensive machinery for the manufacture of special designs.

They are now making up to order for the Windsor Hotel Co., Montreal, a complete outfit of hollow ware in electro silver plate. This is probably one of the largest orders ever placed in Canada for hotel goods, and speaks well for the enterprise of the Toronto Silver Plate Co. As soon as received the Windsor hotel will discard the patterns now in use.

The John Bertram & Sons Co. are manufacturing to order for the Toronto Silver Plate Co. a lot of new and expensive machinery for the manufacture of specialties. We have to congratulate Bertram, Sons & Co. for having secured such a large order, and compliment the Toronto Silver Plate Co. for having placed their order with such a reliable firm in preference to to buying in the American market. Both these are live companies and deserve every encouragement in their respective lines of manufactures.

John Charles Copp, Toronto, Ont., manager of the Toronto Land & Investment Co., died recently at his residence, 96 Wellesley St., aged 65 years, after an illness of several months. Mr. Copp, though latterly interested in other concerns, was for many years secretary-treasurer of the Toronto Silver Plate Co. He was a prominent man in business and financial circles and took a very active interest in religious and philanthropic work. He was a widower and is survived by three children. His funeral at the Northern Congregational Church was largely attended by the trade as well as by the general public.

Beautiful Presentation Bowl Made by a Canadian Firm

Image

A very fine example of Canadian silversmithing, which has received considerable prominence in the newspapers of the Dominion recently, was the magnificent punch bowl presented to Lieut.-Col. and Mrs. A. E. Gooderham, of the 10th Royal Grenadiers, by the officers of the regiment. This bowl, which was manufactured especially for the occasion by the Toronto Silver Plate Co., Ltd., Toronto, is unique in design and beautiful in the character of its workmanship. From the illustration, which appears on the front cover of this issue, a good idea of the piece may be obtained. The bowl itself is exquisitely hand-chased with festoons of maple leaves on either side of the body, branches of maple leaves overhanging, which with leaves form unique side handles. The same design of decoration is introduced on the foot and around the inside of the bowl at the top. The 10th Royal Grenadiers’ crest is embossed on the front of the bowl, and on the opposite side is this inscription: “Presented to Lieut.-Col. and Mrs. Albert E. Gooderham, by the officers of the 10th Royal Grenadiers, on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of their marriage. Toronto, Oct. 25, 1908.” Four hand grenades form the feet, the flames being in gold relief. The bowl is gold-lined.
