An 1851 avertisement for the Glasgow firm of Finlay & Field.


Finlay & Field - Glasgow - 1851

Finlay & Field entered marks at both the Glasgow and Edinburgh assay offices in 1843. It is a little uncertain about which marks they used, but they are thought to have used a 'F & F' in an oblong and possibly a 'J.F' in an oblong, that John Finlay entered in 1828.

They were victims during the week long Glasgow bread riots of 1848. On Sunday the 4th March their shop in Buchanan Street was plundered and jewellery and watches to the value of £1,648 was stolen by the mob.

An example of the work and mark of Finlay & Field. A long condiment spoon 5 1/2" (14cm) in length and weighing 17 grams. It is made in the Fiddle and Thread pattern and typically single struck, a characteristic of Scottish flatware. The bowl is gilded on both sides so its intended use may have been for salt.

It was assayed at the Glasgow office in 1847.
