Swank Inc's site mentions in the company's history that the Swank name was first used in a print advertisement for a men's collar holder in 1927,
but it was almost another decade before it became the corporate name.

Coincidently, Swank Products Inc shows up in the 1937-38 Attleboro, North Attleboro and Plainville, Massachusetts Directory, Sampson & Murdock Co, Boston, and it is not listed in the 1935 or earlier directories.

The information that is given in the American Silver Marks Alphabetical Listing of Maker's Names for James Munroe sounds like it fits John Munroe.
However, it is worth mentioning that John continued to be listed in Barnstable Directories as a dealer in watches in jewelery into the 1850's and that he is listed in the 1850 Census for Barnstable as a goldsmith.

James Munroe on the other may be the gentleman who is listed in New Bedford, Massachusetts directories from the 1830's into the 1870's under the headings of jewelry, chronometers and watches. He is also listed in the 1850, 60 & 70 Census for New Bedford as a silversmith and watchmaker.
