An unusually rich haul, considering that it was made from a private home, was that made by burglars at the home of the late Harry Ryrie, No. 1
Highland Ave., North Rosedale, Toronto, on the night of September 11th. Government bonds aggregating some $5,000 in value, and jewelry to the value of twice that sum were included in the haul. Although the robbery was discovered at the early hour of 4.45 in the morning, it is thought from various indications that the robbers had left some two hours before that time. Circulars have been issued giving the numbers and denominations of the bonds, and a complete description of the jewelry stolen, but at the time of writing no trace of any of them has been found.

In honor of the coming to Montreal of the annual congress of the American College of Surgeons, Messrs. Henry Birks & Sons constructed a
magnificent reproduction of the college crest, worked out in diamonds, sapphires and rubies to the value of £50,000.

The framework of the crest was a solid encrustment of diamonds set in wax with the lettering "The American College of Surgeons" introduced
in square cut sapphires. The base of the frame, also in diamonds, had the Latin motto of the college and its date of foundation in rubies. A hand-painting, the work of the firm's artist, represents the surgeon's symbol—the serpent and rod—in the hands of the patriarch, and the medicine, the original healer of North America, side by side, the picture being enclosed in a jeweled setting. Approximately 3,000 jewels are employed in the making of this design, which was exposed in Messrs. Birks' window, and also at the Fashion Show which was staged last Thursday for the benefit of the ladies accompanying delegates to the Surgeons' Congress.

During the week, Mr. L. de la Penha, Messrs. Birks' employee who claims to be the only diamond cutter in Canada, was engaged supervising the process of diamond cutting being carried out in their window.

An interesting cartoon competition has been held by Henry Birks & Sons, diamond merchants of Calgary, during the Stampede and Jubilee week celebrated by that thriving Albertan city on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. The jewelers tried during the stampede week in July to find out how many of the citizens of Calgary and the surrounding territory really knew the old timers, the early settlers, and the prominent men connected with the stampede. Crowds were attracted to the windows of the jewelry store to view the 20 interesting cartoons of the well known citizens. For the first correct answer Birks gave a diamond ring, for either a lady or gentleman who was fortunate enough to guess both old timer and present prominent head of the Stampede. Two other prizes were given — a lady’s bracelet watch or a gentleman’s pocket watch, as the second award, and for the third the choice of a bar or scarf pin, depending upon the sex of the fortunate winner. In conducting this interesting contest which tied up with the Stampede and Jubilee in a most effective manner, Birks had all the answers indicated plainly on slips which were furnished the entrants at the store. The time was carefully marked on the slip as it was handed in, and in this manner it was easy to arrive at the first correct answer.

Henry Birks, president of Henry Birks & Sons, Montreal, attained his 83rd birthday on Nov. 30, having been for 66 years continuously engaged in the jewelry business. He is still hale and able to take an active part in the affairs of the firm. On Nov. 28 William M. Birks, of the Birks concern,
past president of the Montreal Board of Trade, was presented by that body with an exact replica of his portrait, which was last year hung in the
Board of Trade council room in recognition of his services.
