Jewelers and silversmiths have held some interesting combinations of occupations. Here's one that I just came across: from the Gazetteer & Business Directory for Albany & Schenectady Co, New York 1870-71, Jacob Knupfer, jeweler and lager beer saloon, 28 Howard, City of Albany.

The artificial fishing baits could well have been silver lures which attract fish by catching the light and moving randomly in the water. Such items are still for sale today. Even an old stainless steel spoon will sometimes do the trick; the fish don't seem to look for hallmarks.

Silversmiths and jewelers quite often transition to other lines of work. Their backgrounds give them a pretty wide open field to choose from when economic necessities or other factors call for a job change.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, Pardon M Stone of Providence, Rhode Island went from being a jeweler to being a corset manufacturer.

I don't quite see the fit, but obviously he did.

We should not here forget the equally wonderfully named Spranger Barry, the subject of a previous Contributor's Note, who went from silversmith to actor to theatre manager.

Just when you thought my sense of humour had been mislaid would you please oblige me by giving no detail on how "I Beg Your" Pardon Stone made the corsets. Images of ladies in close fitting suits of silver armour have already caused old knees to shake.
And finally, if born at another time, would Spranger have been a star of the silver screen?

Apologies,
Mike

Another person in the jewelry business that made what appears to be on the surface at least an unusual job change was Harry H Tammen of H H Tammen Curio Co. He went from being a bar tender to operating a free museum that apparently highlighted natural history of the Southwest to being newspaper owner.

The novelty company was another of his successful enterprises.

I say the leap from bartender to newspaper owner on the surface looks unusual, but I can't help thinking that it had something to do with fact that his father had been an editor and publisher in Independence, Iowa and likely worked in the same line in other locations as well.

Here's an unlikely combination.

In 1893 the English owned, Japanese based firm of retail and manufacturing silversmiths, Arthur & Bond advertised the services of a tattooist at their Yokohama branch.
