JEWELLER'S ASSISTANT CHARGED WITH VAGRANCY

The hearing of a charge of vagrancy which was brought against a young man named Henry Price, a jeweller's assistant, at the City Court last week, and adjourned to enable accused to bring witnesses on his behalf, was continued yesterday before Mr. Cressvvell, P.M.

Benjamin Henry Price, jeweller, father of accused, stated that his son had at times earned upwards of £1 a week from him. . On occasions his son would stay away from home for a month at a time.

Robert M'Farlane, jeweller, stated that during the past five years he had repeatedly noticed accused working for his father.

Mr. Cresswell said he thought the bench would not convict accused on the charge; they were of opinion that the police had every justification in
arresting him, as he had hung about the streets day and night.

ASSAULT AND ROBBERY

JEWELLER'S ASSISTANT ATTACKED

The Jewellery shop of Mr. John Milne in Brunswick Street, Valley, which was burgled last Saturday afternoon, was the scene of an assault and robbery on Thursday.

According to the story supplied by the police a man came into the shop and asked to see a gold watch. The assistant, who was looking after the
shop by himself, found a watch for him, and allowed him to examine it. The man turned It over and over, and at last expressed himself satisfied with It. He then asked, for a gold chain, and while the assistant had his back turned the man dealt him a heavy blow on the head. He then struck him on the body and rendered him unconscious. Then hastily gathering up the chain, he decamped with it and the gold watch.

Some few minutes later a woman entered the shop and found the assistant still lying senseless on the floor. She hastily summoned the police.

The ambulance brigade arrived later and attended to the unfortunate man.

EILEEN HEINZE

Miss Eileen Heinze, a jeweller, had diamonds valued at £150 stolen from her today. She was walking with her sister in Prahran, when four men approached them, one of whom shot an Alsatian dog which the sisters had with them on a leash. Miss Heinze attempted to throw a bag which contained the diamonds onto a roof, but it fell to the ground and the men seized it and escaped in a car.
