The story of a pearl necklace bought from Tiffany of Regent St. by Mrs. Spreckles, member of a well known American family, and afterwards sold and broken up, was told at a London police court a few days ago when application was made for the discharge of a witness summons, the prosecution having been dropped. Originally the prosecution was against a William Barrett for the alleged theft of the $82,000 necklace. Barrett was a friend of Mrs. Spreckles. He obtained a loan of $20,000 on the necklace. Later he sold it to a Hatton Garden firm for $40,000, a price considered reasonable by the diamond dealers since they received 100 per cent. profit. The Hatton Garden gem dealers broke the necklace up, sold some of the pearls and the diamond clasp to another gem dealer who, in turn, made up a new necklace twice the size but with many pearls not as valuable but the same diamond clasp, and sent it around for sale. Messrs. Tiffany at once recognized the necklace by its clasp and informed Mrs. Spreckles’ attorneys. A warrant was applied for against Barrett and a witness summons was issued against Tiffanys to produce the necklace in court. In the meantime Barrett had got across to the United States. Mrs. Spreckles also left England for America and since then no further proceedings have been taken. Magistrate Mead asked if it is the fact that Mrs. Spreckles had abandoned the prosecution. He was informed that she had, absolutely. The position was, the magistrate was informed, that Tiffany & Co. still had the pearls but would not give them up while the witness summons still stood against them. The magistrate said he had no jurisdiction to discharge another magistrate’s summons. In his opinion the summons might be regarded as waste paper. Under these circumstances Tiffany & Co. may be prepared to hand over the necklace to whoever is considered to be the present bona fide owner upon formal application being made.

At the office of Tiffany & Co., last week, the report which appeared in the daily press to the effect that this house has leased a 13-story building in the retail district of San Francisco, Cal., was declared to be without foundation, as Tiffany & Co. had no idea of opening a branch in that city at present. How the report originated the concern could not say.

SAN FRANCISCO

It was erroneously reported from this city, last week, that Tiffany & Co., the well known jewelers of New York, London and Paris, had taken a lease of the Head building in the retail district. Word has been received from the New York house to the effect that the report was in no way correct and that if any house of the name had taken such a lease, it was someone who had no connection whatso- ever with the original Tiffany & Co.

According to an announcement received in this city last week, the establishment of Tiffany & Co. in Paris, is to move its handsome offices in the Equitable building in that city, at the corner of the Rue de la Paix, to another location. The announcement, however, was unofficial and verification of it was not obtainable. The Equitable building, the present quarters of the company, was completed a few years ago, and was the first modern office building erected in Paris, as well as the largest. No reason was given by the company as to why they had decided on another location, and no statement was given out as to where the new quarters would be.

A reproduction of some of the most exquisite pieces from the Cesnola collection, has been made with excellent skill in the workshops of Messrs. Tiffany & Co. They are now on their way to Paris, and will hold their own against the best reproductions of antique jewelry made by Castellani and others.

Albert Raymond Talcott, 120 Chestnut St., East Orange, was stricken with heart disease as he was about to lift the telephone receiver to answer a call, and died within a few minutes. He had been ill for more than a week. During the past 10 years he has been with the Standard Oil Co., but before that was an engineer for Tiffany’s, New York jewelers. He was born in Rockville, Conn., 52 years ago. Before going to East Orange to live five years ago, he had resided in Newark for 25 years. His widow and a sister survive him.

The $1,000 gold cup made by Tiffany, New York, for the Kentucky Racing Commission, as the trophy for the Kentucky Endurance Stakes to be run Oct. 8, has been received by the commission at Lexington and is now on display. It is made of 22-karat gold, instead of 18-karat, as heretofore, and is altogether the handsomest cup yet given.
