I came across this duty head on an 1837 Dublin spoon: it has a chunk taken out at the top left. Since William IV died on 26th June 1837, it seems likely that the alteration was to signify that the mark was made after his death and before the Victoria duty had been made. Is this the same reason for what seems like the waisted George IV mark from an 1830 Exeter teaspoon, the year of his death? Do any other example of this exist in other assay towns and for other monarchs?
