THE INDUSTRIES EXHIBITION AT BIRMINGHAM
Surmounting this base is a double exhibit of Mr. G. H. Johnstone, of Northampton Street, who shows a large and varied collection of gentlemen's jewellery, such as sleeve links, solitaires, studs and pins in almost every form conceivable, in 15 and 18 carat gold. The sets of studs are whole pearls of rare value others are of a simple character, forming a half bead. In the collection of links, we notice the cannon which has for the opposite link a ball. We also observe studs and links of a sporting character, such as the horseshoe and whip. His collection of pins are selected with a new to suit the sporting as well as the most fastidious taste.

An example of the work of The Newcastle Handicrafts Company, an Arts & Crafts silver bowl with a swing handle, chased foot and hammered finish. The handle being attached with strap-work brackets. The bowl is 5¾" (14.5cm) in width, 5" (13cm) in height (including handle) and weighs 256 grams. It was assayed at Birmingham in 1908:
The Newcastle Handicrafts Company was established in 1899 by Richard George Hatton (1864-1926) and Charles W. Mitchell (1854-1903) in an effort to give the students a chance to execute work in silver and other materials from Hatton's designs.

Ralph Heaton & Sons - Birmingham - 1885
Messrs. Ralph Heaton & Sons, of Birmingham, have recently turned out 9,000 large bronze medals for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, in addition to a new North Borneo coinage, and are now engaged on a silver coinage of £80,000 in value for Nicaragua. The firm is doing a large and increasing trade in copper cylinders, produced by their special process for drawing down into tubes.

This contract, which is the largest of the kind that has ever been placed, is to supply, within a year from date, 90 coining presses and all the necessary machinery for fitting up a mint in China. The extent of this order may be estimated from the fact that there are only sixteen presses in the Royal Mint in London.

Noted as an exhibitor at the British Industries Fair of 1947.
The business of the Birmingham Plate and Cutlery Works Limited was struck off the Companies Register in 1950.

An example of the work and mark of Arthur Willmore Pennington, a set of hair curlers, assayed at Birmingham in 1903:
Arthur Willmore Pennington entered his mark with the Birmingham Assay Office in May 1901.
Although the 1861 Census records AWP as born at Birmingham, he was in fact born at sea en route to Boston, a voyage that also saw the death of his father. AWP was christened upon returning to England on the 26th February 1855 at Saint Martin's, Birmingham.
