A policeman saw their heads through a skylight, and after an exciting chase he captured two. The third man escaped by jumping through a bedroom window. The pockets of one contained 70 gold watches and rings, and the other's socks concealed gold chains and watches. The property recovered was valued at £400. The third man carried away £300 worth. During the chase a constable was injured by falling through a glass roof. The two men were remanded by the magistrates.

A.J. SMITH
Variety Works, Frederick Street, Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM JEWELLER ROBBED
A daring jewellery robbery was perpetrated in Manchester on Monday. Mr. A. J. Smith, of Variety Works, Frederick-street, Birmingham, while calling on a customer about half-past five in the afternoon, left the porter with his samples on a truck outside the shop, and while the man's attention was momentarily diverted, both the truck and the stock, which consisted of brooches, earrings, pins, studs, and other articles of jewellery, disappeared. Although an immediate search was instituted, no trace of the property could be found, and so far the police have been unable to discover any clue which may lead to the arrest of the thief or thieves. Yesterday morning two of the bags which had contained the jewellery were found on the railway near Manchester, but they were empty. It is supposed that the robbery had been carefully planned before-hand, and that Mr. Smith was seen engaged in the shop before any attempt was made to divert the attention of the porter.

F.A. CHANDLER
Victoria Terrace, Leamington Spa
F.A. Chandler - Leaminghton Spa - 1897
SUICIDE OF A SCHOOL-GIRL
Mr Moore, coroner, last night held an inquest on the body of Elisabeth Chandler, daughter of a Leamington jeweller, and pupil at the Warwick Girls' High School, who drowned herself on Friday night. Deceased, who was only 11 years old, left a letter in her school-desk telling her mother she was going to die, and that Mrs Elson, the mother of a schoolfellow, knew her misery, for which she should be beaten if she returned home. This "misery," it transpired, was that deceased had obtained stationery in another girl's name, about which inquiries were being made. She had undressed herself before jumping into the canal. The jury returned a verdict of temporary insanity.

JOHN SNAPE
Birmingham
DARING JEWELLERY ROBBERIES IN BIRMINGHAM
At Birmingham, on Wednesday, John Harris, a returned convict, nearly 70 years of age, was charged with stealing nearly one thousand pounds worth of diamonds, amethysts, topaz, carbuncles, and other precious stones, from the warehouse of Mr John Snape, manufacturing jeweller. Last Sunday week the prisoner was seen by persons living opposite the premises to boldly unlock the warehouse door at mid-day. A few hours afterwards it was found that the iron safe containing the precious stones had been forced and the place ransacked. The prisoner was further charged with burglariously entering the premises of Silvester and Co., jewellers, Summer-hill, the previous night, and stealing £200 worth of wedding rings and other jewellery. He was arrested on Tuesday by Detective-Inspector Black. A remand was granted. Harris has only just returned from penal servitude for attempting a similar robbery. He was then captured upon the roof of a house after a chase for several hours over the tops of the houses in the principal thoroughfare.
