Charles Pryse and Richard Redman entered their mark 'P & R' contained within an oblong punch, with the Birmingham Assay Office, on the 4th April 1858, 13th April 1858, 26th April 1858, 13th June 1862, and 29th March 1865.
Charles' brother, John Pryse, who also worked for the firm, was murdered at work on the 6th April 1867 by a clerk named James Scott, who was found to be embezzling money from the firm. Scott then shot Charles in the hand while struggling with him. Scott was found guilty of murder and condemned to death, but was reprieved, and the sentence commuted to penal servitude for life. He was released on license in 1887.
Charles Pryse was one of the founders of the Birmingham Small Arms company, famous for their guns, cycles, and motorcycles.
Charles Pryse died on the 12th March 1887, aged 73 years. He is buried at Key Hill Cemetery, Birmingham. His grave also records the death of his brother, at the hands of a 'cowardly assassin'.
