Danish month marks

Danish silver and Danish marks are set by strict regulation. Standard is 4 marks, maker, year mark(3 towers), guardein and month mark. When the tax was paid the month mark was set by the guardein. In most cases the payment of tax equals the month that the item was made.

In the period 1676 until 1830, month mark was according to the Zodiakaltegn (tegn=signs) and from 1830 until 1852 the mark was of the type Naturalistic. At least that is what the book said. However nobody knows for sure. The book Bøje has this information from the authors findings. So date could vary - I think they do I have a spoon from 1823 with naturalistic signs (and they are supposed to be from 1830) so the shift in marks was properly more “unofficial” but let us see how many of the 24 different month marks I have in my collection.

Marks to follow.

adding a few more perhabs I can ask admin to delete first reply as they all are in this as well. Its difficult to take good pictures of those small marks. I will search for more - 24 marks that is a lot and I have fewer than i thought at first.

Thank you very much. Could you please let me know the name of the book to which you refer. When was this book released? Can I purchase it?

The book is by Chr. A. Bøje - "Danske guld og sølv smedemærker før 1870"
Politikens forlag 1979, First edition 1954
ISBN 87-567-3288-0
It is in 3 books one for Copenhagen, one for Købstæderne and one for Sønderjylland.
The first edition had all 3 in one book. Bo Bramsen continued work and in the 1979 edition it was published in 3 books as it was extended with many more marks. Not possible to buy today and no plans of re-publish. Silver has a limited audience in Denmark.
