A Tribute to Nathan F. Swift

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., April 25, 1919.

Editor THE JEWELERS’ CIRCULAR:

In the death of Nathan F. Swift, one of our veteran salesmen, for many years associated with the Webster Co., silversmiths, of North Attleboro, with a fine record of 40 years of honorable, conscientious service rendered alike to his trade and to his house, the traveling fraternity suffers a keen feeling of loss and the severance of long enduring ties of friendship.

He was always the same gracious, genial personality, endeared to the hearts of all who enjoyed the privilege of his acquaintance. Modest, unassuming, never insisting on his own opinion, he was yet ready at all times to defend his point of view, which invariably was “on the square,” as we who knew him, know full well.

How many have said, “If I could enjoy the confidence and respect of the buying as well as the selling trade that is cordially given to Nate Swift, I would be happy.” Assuredly they would. It isn’t given to all of us to possess the traits that made his friendship so thoroughly enjoyed by all within his circle of acquaintance.

In the Middle West, where his territory lay, he was held in the highest esteem, while in his home town, “on the Cape,” many can testify to his unswerving friendship. There was a reason for these tributes to his goodness. Nate was “white” through to his soul. He did not pride himself in it, it was born in him. Good-bye, brother, there were few like you.

Very truly,

A Fellow Traveler.

Eugene L. Cardin was given a hearing in the Fourth District Court, Saturday, before Judge Fred B. Bryam. Cardin admitted his guilt of the charge of the larceny of goods valued at $300 from the G. K. Webster Co., North Attleboro, but entered a plea of not guilty of being an accessory to the highway robbery of Arthur Greene, bank messenger for the Webster company, who was held up in August, 1906. He was represented by Attorney Harold F. Hathaway, of Taunton. On the larceny count Cardin was sentenced to serve 70 days in the House of Correction. He was found probably guilty of being connected with the holdup and was ordered released in $2,000 bonds for the February term of the Grand Jury. Through his attorney Cardin appealed from the jail sentence on the larceny charge.

Damage Worse by Water

North Attleboro, Dec. 13. - The watchman in the Union Power Building was surprised this morning, when making one of his rounds, to find that water was flowing through the ceiling to the lower floor. He made an investigation and found that in some way a fire had started in the shop of G.K. Webster & Co., on the upper floor, and that the automatic sprinklers had worked so thoroughly that the fire had been extinguished, and then the water, continuing to flow, the shop and the other shop son the floors beneath had also suffered considerably from the water. The loss by fire was slight, but the loss by water will amount to about $600. The firms affected are R. Blackinton & Co., E.I. Franklin & Co. and G.K. Webster & Co. No alarm was rung in.
