What-is-it question LXXVII.

Postby 2209patrick » Fri Nov 02, 2007 2:25 pm

This sterling silver item was made around 1910.
It measures 2 inches (5.08cm.) by 3.5 inches (8.89cm.).
What was it used for?

The nearest thing I have in my collections is an early calculator, but this has to be a bit simpler.

A wild guess - a points recorder such as a crib board or for card games

Hello.
Kerangoumar, sorry, it's not an early calculator.

Larkfield, you are close, but it's not for cribbage or card games.

A golf scorekeeper... there are 18 holes. If so on hole 10 he is way over par!

JLDoggett, well done.
Yes, it's a golf score keeper.

One would think that with a set of St Andrews mashie niblicks et al in my closet I'd have twigged to the 18 as representing holes! Goes to show that one can be looking right at something and not see it. Were these very popular? & where?

And for those of us who can be real duffers on the course, do the stroke numbers go above 9?!

Kerangoumar, I thought the 18 numbers would have given it away more quickly too.
The book doesn't say who made it.
Have only seen a couple of these from the early 20th century.

Dmay, that's the great thing about this scorekeeper, the worst you can get is a nine.
