This piece was made in London, 1810, by Thomas Menton.
I'd estimate the length at 5 inches (12.70cm.).
What was it called?

that's a nutmeg grater.

While this probably could be used as a nutmeg grater, that's not what it was intended for (according to a couple of my references).

some of those old boys do have secrets! (referring to my mother's 2nd cousin once removed, a chef, who always claimed that his was a nutmeg grater - tho' I don't recall smelling any 'baccy on him)
