This small sterling case is about 3.5 inches long and 5/8 inches in diameter. It is used to hold something that also is used to hold something after it is taken out of the case. What is it called?

Hello Doos. That's a good guess, but this item has nothing to do with sewing.
The small sewing set cases often contain a thread winder, thimble and needles. Sewing sets are usually shorter and wider, about 1.75 inches long X 1 inch wide.
It's called a cigarette or cheroot holder case. The newer ones often had collapsable or telescoping holders. Here's an old fashioned one with an amber bit.
