That's a good guess, but that is not what this piece was intended to hold.

That's a good guess, but this item has nothing to do with sewing.

The small sewing set cases often contain a thread winder, thimble and needles.
Sewing sets are usually shorter and wider, about 1.75 inches long X 1 inch wide.

It's called a cigarette or cheroot holder case. The newer ones often had collapsable or telescoping holders.
Here's an old fashioned one with an amber bit.
