A Mystery Whistle.........

Hi,

A Georgian whistle, assayed at London in 1824, no maker's mark.

The mystery, to me, is when you blow this whistle, it makes no sound. Something missing? Dog whistle? It's a mystery to me.













Any thoughts appreciated.

Does anything happen if you block up the four holes around the ring?

The item is not mine, I think the owner has tried various methods, but I'll ask and come back to you.

I'm informed that upon further investigation, a piece of silver that is inside of the piece that was stuck has now been dis-lodged, and now when blown, whilst moving the fingers across the four holes, makes the sound somewhat similar to that of a bird call.

The owner is not 100% in this analysis but it likely that we are close to, if not solved, the mystery.

Hi,
An attaching loop for a fob chain or chatelaine.
Victorian whistles are seen with ladies initials but there were military or navy officers whistles.
My late aunt had one to attract attention if mugged.
An ordinary whistle uses a small ball inside of a chamber to create a pulse in the whistle.The ball contained in pea whistles is actually made of processed cork,so possibly it was exposed to elements, moisture,saliva etc,deteriorated, defragmented and vanished through openings.
Pealess whistles are later invention as far as I can tell.
